The dog at the center of the story is a rather rambunctious boy named Gilligan.

He had been brought to the shelter as a young pup after having lived his early life in poor conditions. This resulted in behavioral issues that he was trying to work through.

The shelter had actually made Gilligan an office greeter. He was allowed to roam the shelter freely during regular hours and greet anyone who came inside. Gilligan was not permitted to roam around the shelter freely after regular hours, however.

One day when shelter staff arrived to work, they found that Gilligan had gotten out during the night and had thrown himself a little party.

Apparently, Gilligan had quite the evening.

Shelter employee Joyce Ross described what she found that morning.

“So I lunock the door, and I came through, and I see Gilligan running around all excited playing, jumping around. I’m like Gill, how’d you get out?” Ross said.

All of the squeaky toys had been pulled out and were scattered throughout the shelter – but just the squeaky ones.

Gilligan is a little picky, it seems.

“He went through each toy one by one to pull out each squeaker,” Ross said.

“And the ones that didn’t have a squeaker, he pulled out and left alone. He skipped all the ones that didn’t have squeakers. He only wanted the squeakers.”

Gilligan’s wild evening goes viral.

Ross posted a video of Gilligan’s wild evening onto TikTok and it promptly went viral. People couldn’t get enough of his wild, one-dog shelter party.

“When I went to look, I was so amazed that Gilligan had gone viral,” said Janet Gates, the Bedford County Humane Society manager.

“I mean, he was everywhere. We had a lady call and said she would like to buy Gilligan a toy every month for the rest of his life.”

She would later post security footage of Gilligan’s overnight party which ended up being just as popular as the original clip.

Shelter staff not planning to part with Gilligan.

The shelter staff were pleased that Gilligan’s newfound internet fame had placed such a spotlight on their organization. Their hope is that it will bring in new adopters to give some of the dogs the forever homes they deserve.

“What great way to show off our shelter and show people what fabulous dogs are waiting at the shelter,” Gates said. “Although, I don’t think we’re going to part with Gilligan.”

Gilligan definitely seems to have had an epic night.

“By his look, I saw he was excited and had a great night all night. He was proud, very proud,” Ross said.

Gilligan did leave the organization’s pet food untouched, however, so he didn’t prevent any of his fellow shelter dogs from getting their meals the next day. A few of the toys were lost to his antics, though.

People can’t get enough of Gilligan.

Many people who have seen the video of Gilligan’s wild night have felt compelled to leave a comment on the video.

“Home in the shelter…I’m glad they love him so much!” Wrote one viewer.

“Has Gilligan been adopted?” asked another, to which someone else responded, “that is his home.”
