The Flash star Grant Guslin plays Dan, a state trooper who kept failing the test to join the state police’s K-9 team. He was about to give up all hope until he meets the most “problematic” puppy in their local shelter.

But the real story behind the movie is much more powerful.

The real-life Ruby is an Australian shepherd and border collie mix. And even if she looks so adorable, Ruby was actually passed from one family to another.

She was just four months old when she was surrendered. Five separate families adopted her, but she was always returned due to “behavioral issues”.

According to shelter volunteer Patricia Inman, all Ruby needed is someone who understood her.

“She jumped and bit her leash. She wouldn’t sit or lie down. She just never stopped moving. She was special, and she needed a special person,” Inman told the Miami Herald.

And despite the temporary homes and false promises of forever, Ruby’s special person ended up being state trooper Daniel O’Neil.

What others saw as misbehavior, O’Neil considered strengths.

When others thought that Ruby was rowdy, O’Neil saw her being “full of energy.”

She was exactly the kind of dog he wanted to train.

He also admitted that he identifies with Ruby. He shared with the Miami Herald that they “knew where each other’s coming from” because O’Neil has hyperactivity issues himself.

O’Neil decided to train Ruby to be a police dog.

Just like the character in the movie, O’Neill had been trying to get into the K-9 program since 2004. He finally got the chance after getting Ruby in 2011. The road was not easy, however.

They invested years in learning basic discipline, tracking, trailing, evidence and contraband detection, and rescue maneuvers on both land and water.

Then, their story took on a Hollywood-esque plot twist.

October of 2017, a teenage boy went missing after a hike. Search parties were deployed but they didn’t yield the results they wanted.

People were starting to lose hope. But after 36 hours, they got unexpected news.

Ruby found the boy.

The teenage boy had fallen into a ravine and was unconscious and barely alive. They successfully evacuated the teen and he has since recovered from the accident.

In a bizarre twist of fate, the boy’s mother was Inman, the shelter volunteer who had never given up on Ruby.

“I was so grateful. I was beside myself and overwhelmed,” she said, as quoted by Newsweek. “So many things had to fall into place for this to happen the way it did. The universe works in mysterious ways.”

Ruby became a local celebrity.

Because of her deeds, she was awarded the American Humane Hero Dog Award for Search and Rescue in 2018. She also proved that shelter dogs only needed that chance to become who they are meant to be.

O’Neil is now in charge of the K-9 operations of the Rhode Island state police. He still partners with Ruby but is also training a new dog called Koda. Rescued by Ruby is now streaming on Netflix.
