Shelter puppy is protective of little sister – then staff realize it’s because she’s disabled

Three-month-old terrier blend Star is completely deaf and almost totally blind. You would think that Star’s life would be filled with problems, but thanks to her brother Denver, she is living her life to the fullest.

Life could have been much different for the two siblings. Fortunately, a couple found them dumped in a rural part of Louisiana and took them in, along with their six other siblings and their mom. The family of dogs stayed with the family until the pups had finished nursing.

Then it was off to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, almost 2,000 miles away in San Diego, California, so they could all find homes. The shelter staff noticed right away that the Star and Denver shared a strong bond.

“The thing that was rare for us to see is how completely bonded these two were,” Jessica Gercke, spokesperson for Helen Woodward told CBS 8.

Soon after arriving at the shelter, the mom and other sibling had been adopted out. Now, it only remained for the two to find a home of their own – hopefully with someone local and who would take both of the pups in at the same time. Star had come to rely greatly on her brother Denver and would probably be lost without him.

“When she moves to a new location, she moves very slowly, putting one paw out cautiously in front of the other and she ‘maps’ out the area around her,” Jackie Kelleher, social media manager for the center, told The Dodo. “Denver will always be vigilant of her needs even while they are around humans.”

As for Star and Denver, the center staff was bound and determined to keep them together. Their adoption journey was interrupted slightly when Denver suffered a bee sting. But he soon recovered, and both awaited the right owner to adopt them.

Fortunately, Star and Denver were able to find a loving home to go to. A couple adopted them both, and now they are living in a forever home where they can be together – and where Denver can continue to watch over his sister. The pair’s new parents were also pleased to find out that the adoption fees for the two had been covered by a generous donor.
