Shelter employees find sealed container left at work, rush to open it in the nick of time
Turning your dog into the animal shelter can be a hard thing to do. In many instances, pet owners do not want to be parted with their animals, but due to circumstances, this can’t always be helped. By turning your pet into the shelter in the proper way, you can ensure that they stay safe and can hopefully find a new home quickly.
The following story is a perfect example of one of the worst ways to turn an animal in to the shelter.
Workers at an animal shelter find something when they arrive at work
Workers at Paws and Hooves Rescue Foundation in Stillwell, Oklahoma, arrived at work one morning to make a shocking discovery. A pink storage tote was sitting in front of the shelter. The lid was taped closed with duct tape and holes poked into the sides.
And while the workers knew right away what they would find inside, it still surprised them when they removed the lid.
They were shocked when they opened the container
As the shelter staff pulled the lid off, they found the container full of puppies. The tote was so full that the holes drilled in the side of it did little to give the puppies the air they needed to survive. Dehydrated from their ordeal, the puppies were given some water before being looked over by the vet.
The vet found that some of the puppies were on the verge of death. Fortunately, the shelter workers found them when they did.
All of the puppies were able to find a home
The puppies were all able to pull through, but it left shelter volunteers questioning why someone would do such a thing. The shelter also issued a plea for anyone wishing to leave dogs at the shelter to not do so in such an inhumane and cruel way.
Thankfully, all of the puppies ended up finding loving homes, but the situation could have ended up much worse.
Can you drop off your pet at an animal shelter?
Some animal shelters allow pet owners to drop off their pets at the shelter if the pet owner can no longer take care of them. The ones that do allow this usually require advanced notice so that they can make arrangements to receive them.
Before taking your unwanted animals to any particular shelter, call ahead and see what the shelter allows. There is most likely a fee involved, which is why some pets are abandoned in improper ways.
The proper way to turn your pet over to an animal shelter
If your local animal shelter does allow you to drop off pets (with an advanced warning), you will need to set up a time to drop your pet off. Keep in mind that if the shelter is full, it could be weeks or months before the shelter can take in your pet.
In many cases, it is much faster to find someone to care for your pet instead, including asking friends, coworkers, or family members.
Ultimately, you want to give your pet the best chance of getting adopted into a loving home. And while it might be hard to give up your pet, doing so in the proper manner can help ensure that this process is as easy as possible for you and your pet.
