Sweet German shepherd befriends a bunny and a guinea pig and now they’re BFFs
Seeing dogs get along with other critters never gets old. They’re hardwired to befriend most things, and it never fails to make us warm and fuzzy to watch it.
Marley the German Shepherd here has some pretty unlikely friends.
The long-coated German Shepherd made waves for her unconventional choice of friends.
She’s buddies with a guinea pig, and it’s just as silly and cute as it sounds.
In a viral Facebook video, Marley snacks on some kale with her squad. While the guinea pig treats itself to some carrots, Marley enjoys chewing on some kale. At least she’s eating her greens!
Domestic dogs are a pretty outstanding case of genetics. We’ve managed to take the wild, predatory wolf and turn it into the perfect best friend over several generations.
While her ancestors relied on hunting live prey and scavenging meat, dogs like Marley can somehow enjoy greens and factory-made dog foods. That, and we’ve managed to downsize some of them to fit in purses.
Evolution is pretty weird that way.

And let’s be honest, German Shepherds don’t have a spotless track record of being friendly with small critters. Often, all it takes is the sight of a scurrying little animal to send them into “Chase” mode. The reasons are usually more playful rather than predatory.
Still, the smaller animal usually doesn’t know that.
Getting a German Shepherd to be gentle around smaller dogs, cats, or even guinea pigs is possible. It just takes a lot of training. Marley demonstrates pretty well what a well-trained German Shepherd can look like.
That guinea pig is calm as a cucumber, even if it’d rather have carrots.
Marley here is impeccably gentle and calm. Even when grabbing kale from right in front of the guinea pig, she does it with enough gentleness to barely bother the guinea pig.
How often do you see a dog who eats its greens and knows its table manners?
This isn’t the only video where Marley showed her gentleness. She also got up close and cuddly with some ducklings, even going as far as letting them rest on her head.

Training a Shepherd to be this gentle might take a while, but it’s 100% worth the time and effort as Marley demonstrates.
Her mom clearly wanted Marley to be the best she could be.
From the greens to the table manners, to the bonding with other animals.

She’s truly learned to be a best friend to anyone, regardless of size or stature.
Well, Marley’s got plenty of reasons to be gentle. She’s got a human family with special needs, and Marley’s got to be equal parts tough and gentle to protect her.
Goes to show why the German Shepherd is such a beloved dog.
