German shepherd goes missing after fatal car crash but retired cop saves the day

A German shepherd named Gemma experienced something truly awful. Thankfully, however, she ended up safe thanks to some kind-hearted people.

Gemma was in a car with her owner when it was involved in a terrible accident on the I-95. The impact of the collision was so strong that she was thrown from the vehicle.

She landed in a nearby field.

Gemma wakes up with no idea where she is.

When Gemma came to, the scene of the accident had been cleared. There was no one around, including her family. She must have been so worried about her owner.

There was nothing around her that she recognized either.

Gemma decided to wait by the side of a road not far from where the accident had taken place.

Although we can’t be sure what was going through the German shepherd’s mind at the time, one can assume she was hoping that her owner would turn up safe and come to bring her home.

Hours went by, however, and there was no sign of Gemma’s family.

Eric and Mary VonCanon then drove by Gemma a few hours later.

The retired couple approached Gemma in their car.

The VonCanons had heard about the accident and had taken a detour to avoid any potential traffic congestion that was resulting from it.

That’s when they spotted a frightened-looking Gemma sitting on the side of the road.

The couple knew that Gemma wasn’t a stray because she was wearing a collar and had her leash on at the time as well.

She also had small scrapes over her body.

The couple rather astutely realized that the dog had likely been involved in the crash they had heard about.

The VonCanons own 2 German shepherds themselves and were not frightened of the girl but they didn’t want to scare her off either.

They knew she was likely nervous and frightened from the accident. Eric would later say that he could tell Gemma was friendly when he made eye contact with the girl.

He picked up Gemma’s collar and led her over to his car.

That’s when he noticed she was limping and he became sure that she must have been involved in the car accident.

The couple gets Gemma medical care.

The couple took her to Brook Run Animal Clinic to get checked out. Fortunately, her injuries were minor and she would make a full recovery.

Eric then called the number on Gemma’s collar and the dog’s owner answered. She was in the hospital but she was okay.

She later explained that she had been phoning vet’s offices to try and find Gemma.

β€œShe explained to me that even when they were trying to get her out of the car, all she was doing was yelling about her dog.” – Eric VonCanon

Sadly, 4 occupants in the other car involved in the accident died. It’s a tragic tale but Gemma and her owner were at least reunited.

Had Eric and Mary not stopped and picked Gemma up on the side of the road, who knows what would have happened. Thankfully, there are good-hearted people out there who care about the well-being of pets like Gemma.
