When you sign up to work for the Sheriff’s department, there is no doubt you know you will be called to help in the most unbelievable situations. Certainly, negative situations are the first that come to mind.

Domestic violence, car accidents, or even a hostage situation. But our first responders are first and foremost there to help us. The People.

In the situation in this story, Sergeant Chris Howlett of the Chautauqua Sheriff’s Office found himself in a snow-filled ditch and in a situation that didn’t involve any people at all but, a lost and injured dog.

Sergeant Chris Howlett was with his partner, Deputy Jason Beichner when they received a report about an animal in distress.

The two could have very easily not responded. There was a foot of snow on the ground, it was freezing. They could have called animal control and let them deal with the situation. But they decided to jump in and help out. So off they went to the scene.

When they arrived, they were heart-broken to find a female boxer hurt and lying in the snow. She had been hit by a car with such force that it tossed her off the road and into the ditch.

The car never stopped and left the pup there to die. They could see the pain and the fear the dog had in her eyes.

They wanted to do whatever they could to help the poor dog. To try and reduce her stress and warm her at the same time, Sergeant Chris Howlett slipped his jacket off and placed it around the dog. He remained by her side to comfort her while Deputy Jason Beichner left the scene to try and find the owner.

Someone passing by noticed the Deputy, crouched over the dog keeping her warm.

That person took a photo of the moment and later sent it to the Chautauqua Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s office decided to post it to their Facebook page but added a special message along with it.

During times that there seems to be negative press towards law enforcement this shows a bit of compassion on the part of law enforcement and specifically our deputies. Sgt. Chris Howlett seen comforting a dog that had been struck by a vehicle. She was reunited with her owners who are monitoring her condition. She sustained minor injuries but is expected to be okay,” the caption read.

They just wanted to show respect to the officer for doing his job with such compassion. They didn’t expect it to go viral.

It’s been a little overwhelming. To be honest, I’m not the type to be in the spotlight or to go looking for attention,” said Howlett in an interview with The Post-Journal.

Once the department realized so many people loved the story and showed interest in the dog. They decided to post an update:

**Update** The family has reached out to provide an update. Her name is Rogue and she is being evaluated by Veterinarians. She is doing well and hopefully we will back home by Monday. I am sure the family has greatly appreciated the outpouring of support from everyone,” it read.

No one ever came forward and never found the person who hit Rogue. I doubt she’ll ever receive justice for what happened to her. But thanks to the compassionate souls at the Chautauqua Sheriff’s Department, Rogue is happy, healthy, and living with her family again.
