Shi tzu almost dies in coyote attack – but her special collar saves her
As a dog owner, chances are that you worry about a wild animal getting a hold of your dog. This is especially true for smaller dogs that are less likely to be able to defend themselves. Common predators that can snatch your dog included large birds, coyotes, and larger stray dogs. One pup, a Shih Tzu named Brodie has her home invisible fence to thank for saving her life.
Brodie’s owners catch her narrow escape on camera
The whole incident was caught on her owner’s security cameras. It starts when Brodie and a fellow Shih Tzu are let out to play in the yard at night. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a coyote shows up. At first, it looks like the two smaller dogs are trying to play with the larger animal. Then things take a more serious turn.
Brodie wanted to play, but the coyote had other ideas
As Brodie ran toward the coyote, the animal gives chase. Brodie, sensing the danger, turns around and tries to run away. Unfortunately, the coyote is too fast and soon is upon him. Grabbing him by the neck with its jaws, the coyote attempts to carry poor Brodie off. As luck would have it, Brodie was wearing a shock collar for the invisible fence her owners had installed, and it ended up saving her life.
Saved by her collar
The collar, designed to give a small shock when a dog goes past the fence’s barrier, kicked in as the coyote crossed the fence’s barrier. The collar then delivered a shock which in addition to shocking Brodie, also shocked the coyote, causing the predator to drop the frightened Shih Tzu. Brodie was then able to scramble to safety.
Brodie only suffered minor injuries
As for injuries, Brodie was left with a few minor puncture wounds on her neck but is expected to make a full recovery. Brodie and her owners did learn an important lesson and, in the future, chances are they will be a little more watchful the next time Brodie goes outside.
How to protect your dog from a coyote attack
If you have a small dog, then you know how important it is to provide adequate protection for your pet. Even if your pet is by your side, they can easily get separated from you, unless they are on a leash, or a coyote could run up and grab your dog. This could mean the death of your pet and heartbreak for you.
Fortunately, there are some ways to prevent your pet from being carried off by a coyote or other predators. The first is to keep your dog on a short leash while you are walking them. This allows you to pull them back if a coyote is sighted. You can also purchase special vests made of a durable material that resists puncturing and that have animal deterring spikes along the back.
