Woman builds extraordinary off-the-grid home using five shipping containers

With the sprawling urbanization, going back to nature is such a dream.

Imagine waking up to the view of a mountain range. An untouched paradise where the sun’s rays and rain are the only things that trace its landscape. Everything is green as far as the eyes can see and the only things you could hear are the rusting of the leaves and the sounds of the forest.

It might sound like a dreamy fantasy for most of us, but for a homeowner in Coromandel, New Zealand, it’s already a reality.

Situated on top of a mountain, Rosie’s house is a dream come true.

The house is a bungalow made up of five 20 foot upscaled shipping containers. The simple abode isn’t as simple as it seems, however.

The house sits on a 23-acre land in the middle of a partitioned reserve. Since neighbors are hard to come by, which is an understatement, the house is equipped with sophisticated systems for water and electricity.

Rosie’s house has two water tanks, six solar panels, and batteries which enables the house to run on electricity.

The house is entirely off-grid.

Being far from utility pipes, lines, and civilization itself, the house boasts a self-sustaining system for supplies. As Rosie shares it, it’s empowering to live when you don’t have to rely on anything other than yourself.

Besides the utility systems, the plot also has a planting area and a compost system so she could grow her own food. This lifestyle goes hand in hand with the “stewardship” responsibility that the tenants have with the land.

On the outside, the house doesn’t look much.

But don’t let the plain shape and the black paint fool you. Inside is a cozy space where anyone can only dream to live.

Once you step out from the mudroom, the main room opens up into a single space for the kitchen, a dining area, and the living area.

For more efficient use of space, the kitchen wraps on the backside of the room with the dining area sitting in the middle like a center kitchen island. This gives the kitchen a big space to work in.

The living area just has a couch that’s facing a wall of sliding doors. There’s no TV because once you exit the sliding doors, you’ll end up on a deck overlooking the spectacular view of the ridge.

The house provides spots of leisure as well.

It has a library containing various books on different subjects like sociology, anthropology, fiction, and Kiwi literature. And to take advantage of the clear night sky, Rosie also has a telescope she drags out on the deck.

There’s only one bedroom in the house. It has a king-sized bed where two sides are facing two big sliding windows. Imagine waking up with the sunrise and a view of the mountains as far as the eye can see.

Rosie shares that the place is everything she could dream of.

Not only was the house planned by her personally, but it’s also how she imagined retirement. And while living off-grid is not for everyone, Rosie definitely showed that one can live in comfort while also living “away from the comforts” of the city.

It’s a remarkable house with an even remarkable idea behind it. We’re not surprised if some of you will fall in love with it just much as we do.
