Mom doesn’t realize shopping cart with baby is rolling away until man with autism starts running

That trip back to the car with groceries in your hand is never anything short of tiring.

Depending on how much you’ve bagged up, all those cans and boxes in the bag can be quite the hassle to carry in your arms. I’ve nearly strained the muscles in my arms a few times doing just that.

With that much weight on your hands and the delicate, breakable stuff like eggs and glass bottles, it pays to be careful. Though sometimes, it is possible to be too careful.

Ever bumped into someone or nearly get hit by a car because you were rushing with the groceries?

At a Schnucks in Alton, Illinois, one woman was having her own instance of paying too much attention to her groceries.

She had her baby in the seat of a shopping cart, and her groceries were being checked out by the cashiers.

Though it wasn’t eggs or soup cans that started rolling away. It was the baby.

Shopping carts don’t have brakes on them, and this shopping cart was rolling away in the parking lot with a baby in it.

Of all the things at the grocery that you don’t want bad things to happen to, I’d wager a baby is at the very top of that list.

Luckily, things didn’t have to end badly.

Present at the scene was Ben Mazur, a 25-year-old employee who worked at this Schnuks branch. He was retrieving and organizing shopping carts in the parking lot when he spotted the runaway cart containing the baby.

Ben wasted no time and made a beeline for the baby.

He stopped the cart and saved the child. It goes without saying, this was way different than simply helping people carry groceries to their car.

I don’t think he’s going to put that on his resume next time, though.

Still, a heroic act is a heroic act. Ben saved this woman’s baby, and that’s no small feat. It was of course, what any person in his situation would do. But people can’t help but be thankful sometimes, and this was certainly the case here.

It’s hard not to be thankful when someone saves your child, wouldn’t you say?

Ben was branded a hero, and the manager, customers, and even the town mayor recognized the significance of what he did.

Sounds straight of a children’s book, doesn’t it?

He also happens to be on the spectrum. People like Ben walk around us all the time. Their slightly differently-wired brains don’t stop them from doing what all of us can do.

Like Ben, many folks on the spectrum just want to get an education, jobs and start families just like you and me. Why shouldn’t they?

And to make things even better, it was Ben’s birthday on that day. He turned 25, saved a child, got recognized as a hero by everyone, and got a ton of cupcakes to celebrate too. Sounds like a pretty righteous way of celebrating your 25th.

The mayor even declared May 5th “Ben Mazur day.”

How many people can say they’ve done half the things Ben’s done on his birthday?

It beats getting drunk with friends, that’s for sure.
