Shy teen’s entry for talent show will go down in school’s history
Being a teenager is not easy, but it sure is memorable.
Do you still remember your high school days? Were you the popular student? Or, maybe you were the sporty type or the “all A’s” student.
Being in high-school sure ain’t easy, but we all have to go through it.
This is a story about a shy teenager who dreamed of performing and conquering his fears.
He mustered the courage to join his high school dance contest- and his life was forever changed.
Sounds something that we would watch on Netflix, right?
It all started in 2014, where a video of Brett Nichols went viral and made way for his career to blossom.
Six years ago, the then-17-year-old junior at Pitman High School decided he wanted to join his high school dance contest. He wanted to show his friends that he could do it- after all, they were all supportive of him and even encouraged him to join.
In an exclusive interview with Turlock Journal, the young teenager shared what made him decide to join the contest. He said:
“I just figured my friends, they work really hard and encourage me, and I figured this is more for them than it is for me.”
Ever since he can recall, Brett loved to dance, and he loved Michael Jackson.
According to him, as early as nine years old, he was already showing great potential in imitating his idol’s signature moves.
Do you still remember when you used to dance to your favorite artist’s songs?
Brett didn’t just love the King of Pop, he knew he wanted to be like him, that’s why he started taking his dance more seriously – and we mean it.
Brett’s friends knew he had the potential, but like any other shy teen, he had second thoughts. Not everyone can perform in front of a large audience!
Just imagine joining your first dance contest where the whole school population would be watching you. That’s tough; the thought of making a mistake or forgetting the steps will really get into you.
Thanks to his loyal and ever-supportive friends, Brett Nichols decided to give it a try!
In front of his classmates, and all the students of Pitman High School in Turlock, California, Brett stood, ready to do his best.
He was in the center of their gymnasium floor, complete with the iconic Michael Jackson outfit.
He was wearing a black suit, sunglasses, a hat, and of course, a single glove.
Once the song “Billy Jean” started to play, the audience went wild! Brett stood motionless for a moment, then he began Michael Jackson’s crotch-grabbing signature dance move.
Once he began dancing, Brett owned the stage.
He didn’t seem to be the same quiet and shy teen that everyone knew. He was having a blast, and everyone loved him.

The audience was taken by his stage presence even more when he grabbed that mic and started lip-syncing the song.
He knew it so well that you have to take a closer look to know if he really was singing the song.
His moves were smooth, and everyone was enjoying his performance. The audience cheered the loudest when Brett started performing Michael Jackson’s other signature move – the moonwalk.

He won first prize, and we’re not surprised at all. He deserved it.
This is just the start of Brett’s popularity. His YouTube video went viral in just a few days, and he did a guest performance on ABC’s The View.

Because of his viral performance, the song “Billy Jean” went back to the TOP HOT 100 chart!
From then on, the shy boy became more confident and went on to fulfill his dreams.
As of now, the 2014 video already has more than 18M views and is still soaring high.
