Nightclub for elderly created to help fight loneliness with 'tea party disco'

Truth be told, a huge number of elderly people spend their senior lives alone. With no one around to take care of them, they live their everyday lives by relying on nobody but themselves.

Some of them are even forced to work because they need to provide for themselves. It’s really sad to imagine that they’ve been completely deserted by their children and other relatives.

One of the unbearable facts about elderly people is that when their families couldn’t provide for their needs, especially medical, they resort to retirement homes.

Thankfully, a lot of children are still willing to go above and beyond just to provide for their elderly parents’ needs and even their wants.

To save their mother, who was constantly feeling lonely because of her age, siblings Simon Casson and Annie Bowden decided to do something. They came up with the idea of organizing a tea party, and to make it a real party, they invited some of their mother’s friends who were also in their 80s to 90s.

Because of the good effects of the tea party on their mother, the siblings made the next one even better. They decided to hire and decorate their local church hall and spread the word about it to all the senior citizens living in their neighborhood.

It didn’t stop there because the community for elderly people that Simon and Annie started to grow even bigger.

From a simple tea party for their mother and her friends to all the senior citizens in their neighborhood, to five major clubs all over London and South East, which they soon called “Posh Club.”

Described as “a glamorous cabaret for older folk,” the Posh Club is nothing different from an ordinary club. There, you’d see elderly people hanging out and going back to the good old days. However, instead of alcoholic beverages, they’re sipping on some tea, and there are no chips but fancy pastries instead.

Just like in an ordinary club, everyone is dancing it’s just that you’d typically see walking sticks and crutches all over the floor.

What separates them from other clubs, apart from that they only host elderly people, is that their main vision is to give senior citizens a chance to have their own happy community. It also unites them and gives them activities that they will truly enjoy even at their age.

For Simon Casson, it’s his way of making the older generation’s world cross over the world where the younger generation currently lives.

“I think we’ve lost a lot of interaction between the ages, it’s not the type of thing that capitalism encourages.”

The Posh Club also consists of volunteers from different age groups and backgrounds.

One of their volunteers named Dickie, shared that even people from other cities show up to their club and a lot of them expressed their desire to have the same type of community in their own neighborhood.

“They always say, ‘Why can’t we have something like this where we live?’”

The community that they’re able to build is helping old folks fight loneliness and isolation. Whenever they’re in the Posh Club, they don’t just feel that sense of belongingness, but it also makes them realize that it’s never too late for them to have fun.

Happiness is definitely for everyone – no age limits.
