Kindness goes viral as two kids play a cello concert for their quarantined neighbor on her porch

The COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed the world and what we can do in it safely in a matter of months – or mere weeks for those of us in the U.S.

And while nothing will ever make up for the loss of livelihoods and lives to come, people are in need – now more than ever – of some good news. That’s why a story from Colombus, Ohio touched so many.

Taran Tien, 9, and Calliope Tien, 6, both play the cello.

They had been FaceTiming little duets for family members to keep up with their lessons and practice since they were now home from school. But they decided to stage an outdoor concert for an elderly neighbor as well – one that traveled halfway around the world before it even went viral.

When the children’s mother Rebecca Tien called to check in on 78-year-old neighbor Helena Schlam she was told the woman was self-isolating but didn’t need any groceries. She was hanging in there but was disappointed that her family in Israel wouldn’t be able to make their annual Spring trip to visit her during Passover and she wouldn’t get to see her grandkids.

That’s when the kids decided to do something nice for her anyway – they knew she had a piano and loved classical music. So they donned their finest performance costumes and play a private concert for Schlam and her grandchildren to enjoy.

They sat on the porch while the grandmother enjoyed the music from inside with her grandchildren linked in via FaceTime.

Taran wore a suit while Calliope sported a bright pink dress for the performance.

They played for 30 minutes for the women who, at that point, hadn’t left her home in 5 days.

The kids made it through some of Suzuki Book 1 and a bit of Suzuki Book 2 before concluding the show.

“For 30 minutes, they played music ranging from a Bach minuet to “Go Tell Aunt Rhody” for Schlam,” CNN reported.

Schlam even came out onto the porch for some of it – keeping a safe distance to avoid undermining the time she had spent self-isolating.

She called the concert “delightful.”

“It was a little cold, but I just put on an extra coat. The kids are really quite talented, and it was so much fun,” Schlam told the Columbus Dispatch.

Another neighbor, Jackie Borchardt, recorded the show and shared it to Twitter where news of the good deed quickly spread amongst those who needed a pick-me-up.

No one had any idea something like this would go viral. But less than a week later, it had already been liked over 61,000 times and had over 600k views. It was reported on the local and national news.

“I do think there’s a value in a story that moves people,” said Rebecca Tien. “It was just a private event to make one person happy, but I really do see the value of making lots of people happy. I feel like we need it right now.”

Tien said that part of the reason she reached out to her neighbor was that her own mother had just undergone surgery but visiting her would have put her at risk.

“So this felt like a way that I could connect to someone and help in a way that made me feel better about maybe feeling a little helpless that I couldn’t go be with my mom today,” she told TIME.

Of course, she’s a very proud mother herself these days as her children’s thoughtfulness cheers hearts around the country.
