Man puts sick dog in wheelbarrow to make sure they have one final adventure together

Last year, Carlos Fresco, who was then 57, pushed his Labradoodle Monty up the Pen y Fan, his dog’s favorite mountain. Man and dog went on up the Brecon Beacons with Monty in a wheelbarrow

Monty went through an 18-month-long battle with leukemia, and Carlos knew at the time that his 10-year-old dog would eventually cross the rainbow bridge.

It was their last journey together.

Carlos had Monty since he was a puppy, and the duo have explored hills and hiked all over the UK, all while reaching three peaks.

Monty was diagnosed with cancer, so he underwent chemotherapy, where he initially responded well. But his leukemia returned causing his condition to quickly deteriorate.

“I knew Monty was dying as his cancer had returned. He was diagnosed 18 months ago and responded very well to chemotherapy,” Carlos said. “But unfortunately, his leukemia returned eight weeks ago, and he declined very rapidly.”

Monty had lost most of his strength but he still loved the outdoors so Carlos had to think of a way to get his dog to the top of those hills. A friend’s rusty old wheelbarrow did the trick.

All he had to do was dust it off and oil it up.

So Carlos loaded up the barrow with Monty, adding blankets so he would be comfortable before making their way to the top of Pen y Fan.

It was a smooth ride with Monty receiving attention from many strangers along the way. Many of them took turns in pushing him, and Monty enjoyed himself since he always loved mingling with people.

“People on the hills were so kind and equally so sad at his deteriorating condition,” he said. “In fact total strangers asked if they could share in pushing Monty on his last journey – many total strangers shed a tear as we all love dearly our little four-legged friends.”

Carlos thanked everyone for their support and encouragement. Monty and his adventures have “touched so many lives” that everyone he met couldn’t help but smile.

His beloved Monty passed away on the morning of Father’s Day.

Carlos recalled peering over his mattress and seeing Monty look so peaceful.

Another dog who loved adventures was 16-year-old Cocoa. This Chesapeake Bay Retriever went on walks with her owners, Tom Antonino and his wife, Lauren Slepin.

Their favorite place was Virginia Beach.

Cocoa began to struggle when she turned 16. When Tom and Lauren realized that walking was difficult for her, they knew age was catching up.

Not wanting Cocoa to miss their walks, they built a mobile bed so they could still watch the sunsets together.

A few months after getting her mobile bed, Cocoa died. Her family, though grieving and heartbroken, found comfort in knowing that they gave her lots of love and that her last few years were made to be comfortable.

Our dogs devote their entire lives to us, so it’s only right that we love them unconditionally in return.
