If you’re a side-sleeper this is how many pillows you need to get proper support
Sleep is a gift, but it can be a curse!
Waking up from a solid 7-9 uninterrupted hours is a wonderful way to start a day! Waking up from 7-9 hours broken up into 20 minutes segments due to insomnia or discomfort, however, is probably the WORST way to start your day.
Getting good sleep is healthy and important for everyone.
We probably don’t have to explain why getting good sleep is good for you, but we do have some tips on how – particularly for side sleepers! Using a pillow is a key part of orienting your neck correctly and getting optimal spine alignment while sleeping. Throw off your spine, throw off your sleep!
A recent TikTok video has gone viral after explaining some important Do’s and Don’ts for side sleeping with pillows!
If you were one of those people who criticises your wife for having too many pillows, you might want to thank her after this! Here are a few tips that you can use starting tonight.
Using a pillow for neck support.
When sleeping, you don’t want your head to be lower than your shoulders. If that’s happening, you can probably already feel tension or stiffness in your shoulders and neck. You should instead be placing a pillow under your head in a way that keeps the back of your head parallel to the mattress under you.
Pillows and back support.
Using a pillow on your back isn’t used as often but it can be extremely helpful. When used right, it can help decompress your spine and reduce lower back pain. Simply place it below your back for some softer support.
Arm and shoulder support.
Blood circulation and comfort are the name of the game when it comes to pillows and arms! If you want to maximize both, simply place a pillow in front of you and place your arm (in a relaxed manner) on top!
Chest support.
This one may be a bit less physical and more emotional in nature. Studies show that holding something close to your chest can help with anxiety and worry. Waking up with either of those is a sure way to lose lots of sleep. Try falling asleep holding a soft pillow in your chest!
Pelvic support.
This is the last one on our list! Pelvic areas need support, too! This is a great tip for anyone that experiences restless leg syndrome and all it requires is placing a pillow between your legs! It can also help with potential cramps in the area since it keeps the muscles compact.
While pictures help, sometimes you need a video!
Thankfully, Root Cause Medical Clinic released the TikTok video that we talked about above. They love giving tons of different tips for all types of sleepers, too, not just side sleepers. If you need a visual description (some of us are visual learners), make sure that you check out the original video.
