Simon is skeptical of teen when she says she's singing "biggest song ever" – then he hears 1st note
When fifteen-year-old Sarah Ikuma took the stage for her audition on Britain’s Got Talent, the audience had no idea what they were in for. Within the first few seconds of her performance, it was abundantly clear that she would go on to achieve star status.
Sarah is no stranger to performing on stage, but the high school student had never performed for so many people at once (including millions watching at home). She had no idea that she would touch the hearts of everyone who heard her performance.
When Sarah first informed the judges that her audition song was going to be “And I Am Telling You” by Jennifer Hudson, it was clear that they were skeptical of her ability. Considering that Jennifer Hudson’s voice is one of the most powerful and widely regarded voices in the world, it’s understandable that they might have been doubtful.
After all, “And I Am Telling You” is arguably one of the most challenging songs to sing. Simon, as usual, voiced his skepticism and curiosity in regards to her song choice.
“But that’s one of the biggest songs out there,” he said to her. “And you think you can do that?”
But the moment that Sarah Ikuma began to sing, the entire audience found themselves listening intently to her incredible and powerful voice. It was clear that they were in for the performance of a lifetime.
One of the most incredible aspects of her performance was that she got better as she went on. As Sarah reached the middle of the song, her voice rung with the most passion. You can truly hear the raw emotion in her voice as she sings. Not to mention, she didn’t miss a note, was right on pitch, and managed to appear extremely calm and confident throughout her performance.
The audience was clearly in disbelief, and it’s clear from the footage that so was the judges. What makes Sarah’s performance even more spectacular is the fact that she’s only fifteen years old, and yet, her age is just a number when it comes to her talent. Thanks to her incredible performance, Sarah Ikuma is sure to become a famous singer.
Arguably, the most touching moment of this performance was when the selective and at times judgemental Simon Cowell hit the golden buzzer, sending Sarah Ikuma straight through to the next round of Britain’s Got Talent. The entire crowd stood and cheered, but watching Sarah’s surprise as she jumped and screamed as the golden confetti rained down onto her could bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Simon clearly made the right choice when he made the decision to hit the golden buzzer.
As it turns out, Sarah had been scouted by a Britain’s Got Talent scout at a smaller talent show. She obviously stood apart from her competitors.
In another episode, Sarah performed Prince’s Purple Rain, another beautiful cover. Afterward, Simon proceeded to give her one of the most flattering compliments, especially coming from him!
“Of all the years that we’ve ever done Britain’s Got Talent, you are the best singer who’s come on here,” Simon said. That’s arguably one of the biggest compliments he’s ever given!
Unfortunately, Sarah was eventually sent home in one of the later episodes, but the judges ended up bringing her back and giving her a ticket to the finals. In the end, Sarah didn’t win Britain’s Got Talent, but she did get to kick off her incredible music career in front of millions of people.
