Simon meets officer and K9 partner, can’t control the tears when he hears their story

We have all heard some pretty amazing stories about dogs over the years. Particularly when it comes to the incredible lengths they will go to in order to keep their humans safe. One police dog named Finn, though, has blown people away with his unwavering devotion to his handler/partner.

Fortunately for us, the police dog and his handler were kind enough to share their story with judges when they auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent earlier this year.

It all started when Finn and his partner, Police Chief Dave Wardell, decided to chase down a suspect who fled from them. While they were caught up in the chase, the suspect turned without warning. He had a knife with a 10-inch blade in his hand and he lunged to stab officer Wardell.

Little did the suspect know just how loyal the police dog was.

Finn acted immediately, jumping between the blade and his partner. The blade plunged into Finn’s chest before the homicidal criminal removed it and used it to stab Finn in the head as well.

Wardell took advantage of his partner’s bravery and used the moment to quickly cuff the attacker and call for back-up.

Wardell rushed Finn to an animal hospital where he had to undergo emergency surgery. Thankfully, the police dog was going to make it. The veterinarian explained that while the knife had punctured one of his lungs, the blade missed his heart by a hair, which would have killed him almost instantly.

“Finn was linked up to all sorts of machines and breathing aids, and all I could see was my big, brave boy so horribly diminished. Almost his whole body was shaved, beneath a blue protective jacket that kept all the tubes in place and protected his enormous surgical wounds,” the heartbroken officer recalled in an interview with The Daily Mail.

The police dog is a fighter, though, and he made a full recovery!

After Finn had healed from all of his wounds, he went back to working in the field, keeping the good residents of Hertfordshire, England safe with officer Wardell by his side. Finn went on to serve another two years with the force before he was retired, and that’s when things got really good.

Officer Wardell adopted the retired police dog and welcomed Finn to his forever home!

Now, PC Wardell is proving the old adage that “you can’t teach old dogs new tricks” wrong in his spare time with Finn.

German shepherds are highly intelligent dogs and need to be able to use their smarts to stay in good mental health. So, Wardell has been teaching the dog a few new skills.

Much more mind-blowing than the standard dog-tricks, Wardell has taught his former police dog how to actually read minds!

Earlier in April of this year, Wardell and Finn auditioned for BGT with a special trick up their sleeve.

They asked one of the judges to think of a word and write it down. He wrote the word ‘table’. He then had to hold it to his chest while he approached the stage so that Wardell couldn’t see what was written.

Wardell asked the judge to show the word to Finn while Wardell faced away from them.

After Finn saw what was written, Wardell calls him up to the stage and asks him what word he saw. He then kneels down so the dog can, seemingly, whisper the word into his partner’s ear. Unbelievably, Wardell stands up and tells the crowd that the word Finn told him was ‘table’.

After their trick, both Finn and Wardell move to the side of the stage while a massive screen plays a video Wardell created. The video shows pictures of the police dog with Wardell while captions appear telling the audience about Finn’s heroic act of bravery.

Though everyone was deeply moved by the inspiring story, Simon Cowell had been so touched by it that he wept.

While it was clear the team would be moving onto the next round, their act wasn’t over just yet.

Simon Cowell was asked to come up on the stage and kneel in front of the dog. Finn and Wardell had a second trick up their sleeve that you’ll have to see to believe it.

Needless to say, the two tricksters got a resounding yes from each and every one of the judes!

“If I had a golden buzzer left Iā€™d give it to you. When I hear about animal cruelty, especially dogs, it upsets me. A dog will literally give up its life for you. Finnā€™s beautiful, I love him,” exclaimed Simon to Wardell.

Wardell revealed to The Mirror that he was a bit star-struck when he came face to face with Simon, but that his faithful dog was there to put him at ease.

“I got tongue-tied when I saw Simon Cowell but Finn didnā€™t. Like when we were on the streets, Finn pulled us through. Itā€™s a different world, but we smashed it,ā€ Wardell said. ā€œIf I can tell Finnā€™s story, showcase service animals and talk about Finnā€™s law, Iā€™ve already won,” he said.

Finn is the very definition of what it means to be a hero, and he has spent most of his life serving his country. Now, he’s still serving but in a different way, one that makes people feel good. We are so happy that he gets to spend the rest of his days with his best friend and partner, enriching the lives of everyone who gets to meet them.
