Simon puts halt to young man’s audition to pick different song that earns him 34M views
As reality talent shows come and go, there are auditions that we just can’t forget.
The auditions are one of the toughest and most grueling parts of any reality talent show.
But it is also the window through which we see moments that will persist and inspire.
This is one of those moments.
Shows like this also give a chance to undiscovered stars and those artists who just want a second chance at success – much like Brendan Murray.
Murray got X-Factor judges’ attention.
And he had it from the moment he walked on stage.
He’s charming and he carries himself well. When asked about his experience in singing, he shared with the judges that he was part of a boyband when he was 19.
Robbie Williams, one of the judges, joked with him saying that he too was part of a boyband when he was Murray’s age.
The only difference was that Take That experienced enormous success and Murray’s Hometown disbanded after their failed third single.
Murray had to find other work.
He worked as a plumber but all through those years, he always thought of coming back to the limelight and giving it another shot.
He joined X Factor hoping for that moment.
He then introduced his song.
It was Jermaine Stewart’s We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off, then insisted that he was the “elevator version.”
As he sang the ballad version of the pop song, the judges, especially Williams and Cowell, listened intently.
Cowell signaled to stop the music.
The audience booed Cowell, pegging his actions as his usual deprecating and dismissive self. He stopped the song for a reason, however.
After convening with Williams, he said that the song didn’t fit Murray’s vocals.
He knew that there was a star inside the young man and he wanted to push him to reveal that.
They sent Murray backstage.
They gave him time to practice “This Woman’s Work”.
Cowell believed that his voice profile could match the song perfectly. And so, with only a few hours to practice, Murray worked on the song.
When he got back on stage, however, it was a different story.
He missed his first notes and asked to start over. But when he did, he still sang out of tune. The judges offered him water and one last chance to do the song right.
On take 3, Murray had it.
He managed to sing the first lines well and it only got better from there.
Murray showed what he was made of, line after line. And when he got his confidence back, he even crumpled a piece of paper containing the lyrics.

His performance left the judges and the audience in awe. And while people doubted Cowell’s intentions, the moment showed his ear and eye for talent.
Murray became Eurovision’s UK representative.
The young man from Galway participated in the pan-European singing contest with the song “Dying to Try”.
He also participated in Eurovision 2022.
