Single dad adopts baby girl with Down syndrome after she was rejected 20 times before

Adopting a child isn’t for everyone. That’s especially true when a child has special needs. That doesn’t make them bad people, just that for them, it would be too difficult.

But at the same time, many individuals and couples would love to give a child a home, even one who faces daily challenges. Unfortunately, one little girl didn’t have a positive experience. While she desperately wanted a family, it seemed as though no one wanted her.

Not interested in raising a child

When a beautiful girl named Alba was born, her mom didn’t want anything to do with her. The reason … the baby had Down Syndrome. So, the mother put her up for adoption, expecting that she would quickly get placed into a permanent home.

20 Times

Sadly, that’s not how things turned out. During Alba’s time waiting to be adopted, a minimum of 20 families rejected her. They all gave the same reason as her mom … she was a special needs child with Down Syndrome. Although she was still an infant, Alba wanted and needed a loving family.

The irony of the situation

When Luca was 14, he began to volunteer. But ironically, one of the organizations that he felt the most passionate about is the “A Ruota Libera” Foundation. This group provides much-needed assistance and support to children with special needs, in particular, Down Syndrome.

He had both love and experience to offer

Ready to become a father, Luca had all the love in the world to give a child. He also had a lot of experience dealing with special needs kids. As he stated, “I have volunteered and worked with the disabled so I felt I had the right knowledge and experience to do it.”

Luca fell in love with Alba at first sight and she was immediately smitten by him. There was no question that the two of them felt a strong connection. Now, Luca needed to get the adoption finalized.

Easier said than done

It’s relatively common for all adoptions to face challenges during the process. And for Luca and Alba, it wasn’t any different. You see, not only is Luca a single man but he’s also gay.

Luca wasn’t deterred

Considering he wasn’t offering her a “traditional” home environment, some people pushed back.
He didn’t care how hard it would be to bring Alba home as his daughter, he was ready and willing to fight for her. And that’s what he did.

The good news, the adoption was finalized and today, Alba has the most amazing father imaginable. She’s a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted child thanks to this dad. He expressed, “For me, a disabled child is not a second-choice solution but a conscious choice with respect to my vocation and my abilities.”
