Single dad told he could only adopt children with disabilities showed a girl with Down syndrome what love looks like

Being a parent is not just bearing a child, it’s the willingness to love a child.

Luca Trapanese has always dreamed of becoming a father. But as a single man and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, his dreams are smothered by prejudice and disadvantage.

The 41-year-old didn’t give up, though. And through his determination, his life crashed into a little girl who never knew what love meant until she met Trapanese.

Alba and Luca has inspired a lot of people, but it wasn’t always rainbows and butterflies for the two.

Being a parent is easier said than done for Trapanese. In Italy, local social services don’t usually allow for single gay men to adopt.

Instead, their qualifications are funneled somewhere else. Social services only allow them custody of children with disabilities.

It may sound cruel, but this inadvertently led Trapanese to the most important person in his life.

He didn’t mind taking care of someone with disabilities as he has been working with them for the most part of his life.

At 14 years old, he worked with a terminally ill patient who he helped with schoolwork. Through his advocacy, he learned more about kindness, understanding, and compassion.

At 25, he went to a Catholic seminary to train in caring for other people. He met his partner during this time and they were together for 11 years. The two of them dreamt of being a parent, but after separating, he was left chasing this dream by himself.

Alba, meanwhile, was surrendered after her mother discovered she has Down syndrome.

During her stay, 20 families passed on Alba. But when Trapanese learned about her in 20167, everything changed for both of them.

However, when she carried Alba in his arms, he knew he was ready to be a father. The adoption was finalized and Alba finally has someone she can call family.

Friends and family were fond of Alba.

Trapanese shared how his two mothers quickly tended to their grandmother duties when he introduced Alba to them. They were strict with Trapanese and would tell him the correct ways of holding a child, among other things.

“They’re two amazing grandmothers and they’re very caring, they love looking after Alba and I’m glad they’re both in our lives,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

People on the internet also praised Trapanese.

Comments on their social media posts were filled with people saying how amazing both of them are – how adorable Alba is, and how amazing Trapanese is as a father.

Trapanese also shared that Alba has a strong personality and loves being around people. Since then, Trapanese has written a book about his life with Alba.

He proved that being a loving parent was not just about bringing a person into this world. It’s all about the capability of showing unconditional love to someone and raising them with good intentions.
