Single foster dad refuses to separate siblings so he adopts all of them

Robert Carter may be single but he knows how important family is. So Carter decided to be the father of five siblings who were all in foster care. He began with the brothers Robert Jr., Giovanni, and Kiontae but soon learned they had sisters, Marionna and Makayla.

The siblings hadn’t seen each other in months so Carter met with the girls’ foster moms for the meeting.

“I understand how they feel,” Carter told WCVB. “I understand what they went through, so it really touched me. I was already thinking about adopting all of the kids but when I saw them crying, I was like, ‘Ok, I’m going to take all five to keep them together.’”

Carter, at the age of 12, went into foster care in Hamilton County, Ohio. He understood how the siblings felt.

He was a part of nine kids but was separated from his brothers and sisters for years. He didn’t see his youngest brother until that brother turned 16. It was not something he wanted the foster kids to experience.

Carter was given custody of his younger sister and guardianship of his younger brother once he was free from all the legalities.

Carter worked and did all he could so he could get a bigger house for the 5 children.

Stacey Barton, the adoption case manager, was surprised at the number of adoptions by one person.

“Mr. Carter was the only foster parent willing and able to adopt all of the children,” she said. “His childhood background has made him aware of the importance of keeping siblings together. He says that he enjoys being their father and that parenting them is easier than he could have ever imagined! His life is busy, with a lot of love, laughter, and loudness! I have enjoyed working with him and witnessing the children bond as siblings.”

Carter used all his experiences from the past when it came time to care for the kids. He cared for his younger siblings all while helping kids at South Avondale Elementary.

“Making memories to replace a lot of the bad ones,” he said. “Every night I talk to them and let them know, ‘I’m your dad forever. I know what it’s like and I’m always here for you.”

He always, always reassure the kids that he is their father and that he will always be there.

One of the girls, Marionna, took some time to warm up to him.

“She walked in my room last night and said, ‘I just want to say thanks for taking us in and taking care of us when our real mom couldn’t.’ It just really touched me. So just making memories, letting them know I’m here and they never have to go. I’m here for them no matter what,” he said.

Carter is an amazing person to do this. To so selflessly adopt all the kids and provide for them, reassure them that they will be a family for all time is such a beautiful gesture.
