Single mom is saving for retirement in her fabulous tiny home – lives off $75 a month
“My life has been a series of unfortunate events. I have been divorced twice. I have built two houses and I lost the houses basically in the carnage of my divorces.”
Those are the words of Michelle ” MJ” Boyle, a mother of two college-aged kids who is now part of the growing Tiny House movement in America.
Her home is called “My Tiny Empty Nest,” but what’s fascinating about Boyle is that she’s now a tiny house real estate tycoon! Her “My Tiny” brand now has 5 other houses that she rents out and refers to as “My Tiny House Village.”
She built her own home in 2014 after deciding that she didn’t want to spend her life working for anyone else or being dependent on another person ever again.
She moved in right after her youngest went off to college – hence the “empty nest” in the name.
“I built my first house, this house, basically using cash and sponsorships to make sure that I have a paid-for nice, comfortable house when I retire,” she told FLORB in a video that’s been viewed over 2 million times since it was posted in October 2017.
At 8-and-a-half-feet wide by 24-feet long, Boyle has managed to pack an impressive amount of personality into her space.
It has all the comforts of home without any extra space to clean OR a mortgage to pay!
She also has a great eye for design and for making a small space feel like a real home.
While many tiny houses have more of a rustic look, her’s looks like any other living space – just smaller.
Just take a look at her kitchen! It’s the perfect way to get a sense of her style.
And while it has a beautiful modern look, all of her appliances are refurbished vintage pieces from the 1940s and 50s.
She calls her design theme “modern nostalgia” which seems like the perfect way to sum it up!
And she didn’t just follow any old “pattern” when it came to designing the house architecturally. She gave a lot of thought to where she’d be spending the most time and made those the most open and comfortable spaces.
Since the loves cooking and entertaining, the kitchen ceiling is high – and that means there’s less room in her sleeping space where she spends relatively little time (awake at least).
She’s also very conscious of using her vertical space to create architectural interest. And she points out that by doing that – as opposed to concentrating on horizontal space – you end up with less “clutter.”
That’s undoubtedly why her tiny house looks so spacious!
After her success, Boyle has now moved into building other homes for rent on Airbnb.
She even has a beautiful rental in Oregon wine country for anyone interested in a vacation!
It’s pretty clear that not only has Boyle quite literally built herself the life she wants but that by branching out and introducing others to the beauty of tiny homes, she’s secured her retirement.
