When times got hard for Erin Harrison, she found herself and her two twin daughters without a home. For a while, it seemed like she could never get their lives back on track.
For four years, Harrison had worked at McDonald’s and managed to split her time between parenting and work almost every single day.
Yet when the rent rose in her home, she struggled to keep up with the payments. Soon, she found herself evicted with no place to turn to.
After a while, Harrison had no money to book a room at a hotel. Instead, she and her daughters, Hayden and Abbigale, had to sleep in her car.
When she picked the girls up from school, she told them that they weren’t driving anywhere. Instead, they would have to stay in the car that night. So they got inside and waited as all of the other families drove home.
While Harrison and her girls were sitting and crying in the car, a police officer, Seargent Heather Kolke, knocked on the car window.
Harrison panicked, thinking that she would get in trouble for putting her daughters in this situation. So nervously, Harrison asked Kolke if it was legal for her and her daughters to sleep in the car in the school parking lot. Kolke was shocked to hear this. She had only wanted to help the crying family in the car. Now she realized just what Harrison and her children were going through.
“That’s when I knew I had to at least get her a place to stay.” – Seargent Heather Kolke.
So Kolke took to Facebook to inform the community about what Harrison and the children were going through. Pretty soon, people started donating money so that the three could have a hotel room until they got back on their feet.
That evening, Kolke discovered an affordable but comfortable hotel room for Harrison and the girls. They already had raised enough money to stay in that room for a good long while.
Over the coming days, Kolke would check up on the family. She discovered that Hayden and Abbigale had a birthday coming up. So she went back to her police headquarters and arranged a small birthday party for the girls there.
Word of Harrison’s situation and Kolke’s kindness spread. Soon, a news team came to document what they were all going through.
At home, a father, Eddie Azrem, saw the news update with his children. His heart went out to Harrison and her kids. When his own child spoke, it became obvious that everyone in the room was thinking the same thing. The child asked if they could help Harrison and her daughters.
Azrem is a small business owner, and he saw if he could put any money aside for Harrison and her family, they would be much better off. He also contacted other business owners in the city to help out.
Within days, Azrem had raised over $2,500 for Harrison and the girls.
Pretty soon, Harrison was able to find a home that she could afford. The landlord had heard Harrison’s story on TV and knew that she was hard working.
Now Harrison and the girls are secure. This experience has been difficult, but they know that there are others in the community who will help them out in times of need.
