One of their most popular performances online happened to take place a few years back when they performed in the Traditional Duo/Duet category of the 2016 Clogging Champions of America (CCA) Showdown. Their fast-footed routine has been viewed over 50,000 times since then on the organization’s YouTube channel.

The Berea, Kentucky sisters were performing and leading workshops, at least until last year. And we can see why – they make this artform look incredible!

Their 2016 performance begins with both women turned away from the audience, but they begin to tap their toes and spin around to face one another as they join hands and begin some serious clogging.

Lauren started clogging when she was 3 while and Kaylee started when she was 5, according to Doubletoe Times Magazine.

And it’s clear those years of practice have paid off – these two are unbelievable dancers and athletes.

Their talents would eventually land them to star on the Nickelodeon game show Figure It Out as well as a reboot of The Gong Show performing a routine called the “The Terror Tap Twins.”

And while the sisters look like twins, they’re actually 4 years apart.

After winning so many championships they easily earned their place in the CCA Showdown, which pits winners against one another.

“To recognize clogging’s brightest, CCA devised the Showdown of Champions, which brings together the winners from the best competitions in the country to compete under one roof. At each Clogging Champions of America event, the top three scoring teams in each category and age division of Amateur and Challenge (Elementary, Junior, Senior, and Adult) will qualify to dance at the Showdown of Champions which will be held at the beginning of the following year,” explains their website.

The women are now either working or in college, but they still managed to find time to participate in the showdown in 2019. In fact, Lauren was also the Choreographed Solo National Champion that year.

With plenty of personality and over a decade of experience by the time of this performance in 2017, the Thomas sisters were at their peak.

According to their website, the CCA was formed in 1997 in part “to generate more activity and interest in clogging and competition.” But it’s a healthy and inclusive brand of competition.

“The goal of CCA is to create an atmosphere of spirited and sportsmanlike competition, and to provide more opportunities for cloggers within the competitive and entertainment realms.”

Clog dancing isn’t terribly popular, though you can watch thousands of performances on YouTube if you’re interested. But with swing dancing entertaining millions online, it’s only a matter of time before people discover this genre.

And if you’re going to perform at the national or international competition level in the traditional duo category like the Thomas sisters, there are a few rules to abide by, including limiting footwork to traditional (and not modern) clogging steps, concentration on precision, using the entire stage while still acting as a unit, and making sure the majority of the routine is spent with hands joined, incorporating lots of arm movements and couples turns.

And these women have it all!

Dancers must also choose traditional country, bluegrass, hoedown, or folk music for their routines.
