Now you might think, baking bread in a slow cooker? That can’t be! How is that possible?
But baking experts have confirmed that the slow cooker is great as an alternative oven for bread baking.
During the summer, using a slow cooker is a great alternative since it doesn’t heat up the kitchen like an oven will. A slow cooker also works well when the oven is already occupied.
A slow cooker though only operates at around 200°F at the highest setting.
Baking bread with a slow cooker will definitely take longer than usual. But the upside of slow cooker bread baking is you don’t need to wait for the dough to rise. You can do it at the same time with a slow cooker!
Emma Christensen shared her tips on slow cooker bread baking on the kitchn website.
Baking times can vary from one to two and a half hours, depending the settings of your slow cooker.
“The first time you bake, check the loaf after an hour and then every half hour, and then more frequently as it gets close to finishing. Checking the internal temperature is the best way to gauge when the bread is done — a baked loaf will have an internal temperature of 190°F to 200°F. The top will also feel set (no longer spongy) and the bottom will be slightly browned,” Emma Christensen wrote in her article.
It’s also important to do two things before starting the baking process.
Always line the slow cooker with baking paper and spray or brush it with cooking oil. That’ll make it easier to remove the baked bread from the slow cooker.
Remember to add a tea towel in between the lid and the bread. This will prevent the moisture on the lid from dropping on the bread and make it soggy.
Slow cooker bread won’t create that crusty part of the loaf so if you want that, just place it inside the broiler or oven for a few minutes. In case it does get soggy, you can do this tip by Phyllis Good. Take the lid off around the last 30 to 60 minutes of baking to remedy that problem.
