Sneaky possum tries to trick woman into thinking he’s one of her cats
Feeling soft fur run against your hand at night probably means you have a pet who decided to hop into the bed with you.
For Marua McLaughlin, the answer was way more disturbing.
“My door was closed and I knew my cats were not inside the room,” McLaughlin, founder of the nonprofit Off The Wall Grafitti, told The Dodo. “So I was like, ‘What was that?’ And I just bolted upright and went into the living room to sleep on the couch.”
The soft fur wasn’t her cat, it was a possum!
A literal possum had climbed into bed with people in the home, apparently looking for snuggles!
Imagine waking up to the ghostly white face of a possum staring at you while sitting on your chest – that’s the stuff of literal nightmares.
For one of the people in the home who also had a possum encounter, it was just a funny coincidence.
“One of the artists who’s living in my daughter’s room came in and said, ‘I had the cutest baby possum in my bedroom this morning,’” McLaughlin said.
“‘I just scooped it up and put it outside and said, ‘hello.’”
With bewilderment, the entire house just went on with their day! McLaughlin had no idea how they had even gotten into the home. Just a strange incident that happens once in a lifetime, right?
Wrong! It was going to happen again!
After the initial event occurred, everyone just moved on – until something strange happened six months later!
“I heard this new sound, and I was like, ‘That is not my cats, that’s not a raccoon, what is slurping at the water bowl?’” McLaughlin said.
The possum was back and was eating food out of her cat’s bowl! Like before, she tried to get the wild animal out of her home and outside, but it had other plans.
Once it knew there was food and water in the house, it saw no reason to leave.
Instead of calling pest control (like most people would), McLaughlin just let them hang out!
For most people, that is a different level of crazy, but for McLaughlin, she just felt like helping the little family out.
“What I ended up doing was giving up and giving in to the fact that they are here — they were born here under my house,” McLaughlin said. “These are just little community members.”
Incredibly, the possums seem to have adapted to life in her home.
Like a pet, the possums seem to have learned the rules of the home.
Whenever the possum comes and eats food at the cat bowls, it then heads over the litterbox and uses it – it’s literally potty trained! Even crazier is that the cats don’t seem to mind having “competition” around and let the possum keep to itself.
Nowadays, she gets worried when she doesn’t see their little friend.
From a strange encounter to a household friend, Mclaughlin definitely responded in a way that most people wouldn’t. She was rewarded with a household friend for her kindness, too!
