Dread cleaning the shower? These 7 easy tips will make the chore a breeze
There is one evil enemy that makes cleaning the shower so frustrating! Soap scum continues to be a huge problem in bathrooms everywhere, and it isnât going away.
Scientifically speaking, soap scum is formed when the chemical particles of calcium and magnesium in your water, mix with the soap and gather on surfaces. To put it simply, it is a bathroom problem. The longer you let it sit, the more difficult it becomes to remove!
But we want to help you get rid of that soap scum! So here are 7 incredible tips to getting your shower cleaned to perfection!
Now we have to be honest, you will probably still hate cleaning the shower, but hopefully, these tricks will make the task much easier.
1. Open Up âBar Keepers Friendâ
If you looked up a list of the most powerful cleaning products, this one would be somewhere near the top. Bar Keepers Friend is a powdered cleaning product created in 1882, and it’s been tweaked a few times since then. It also makes soap scum run for cover!
How to Use:
Sprinkle the cleaning agent on a sponge, towel, or your favorite scrubbing utensil and just begin wiping down everything. Then, give your shower a thorough rinse and take a step back to view the amazing cleaning productâs work.
2. Create your own non-toxic, cleaner
Soap scum is frustrating to clean, and some of the rather intense cleaners used to get it off smell absolutely terrible. But, there is always the option to make your own cleaner!
All-natural cleaners provide sweet-smells and still get the job done! Check out this tutorial by Oily Rockstars. They recommend using: baking soda, Thieves Household Cleaner, vinegar, and essential oils. Head on over to their blog for more information.
3. Natural items like Grapefruit or salt
Natural cleaners that also smell good are the name of the game. That being said, citrus and salt can also get soap scum out of your shower. All you need to do is cut the grapefruit in half, and then dip it in some salt. (Just donât do this on glass)
âScrub your grapefruit around your shower or tub, making sure to slightly âjuiceâ the citrus over each fixture and lifting it every few seconds to pick up fresh salt from around the tub instead of just pushing it around. You can also use the rind on stubborn areas,â Apartment Therapy reports.
4. Erase away soap scum
The Magic Eraser by Mr. Clean is just as good as the name implies. You can use these sponges to make soap scum completely disappear. This can take away stains from shoes, countertops, hardwood floors, and of course, bathrooms.
This article from How Stuff Works fully explains the magic eraser, âthe secret behind these types of erasers is a material commonly called melamine foam. With just a little water, melamine foam can dig in and destroy stains that other products canât touch.â
5. Try this special mixture
You might not have a Magic Eraser or time to run to the store or order them online. But you need something quick and effective that you already have in your house? Try this special mixture out in 4 easy steps:
- Warm 1 cup of vinegar in the microwave for 30 seconds
- Add 1 cup of Dawn into a spray bottle
- Mix the heated vinegar with the Dawn in the spray bottle
- Shake!

6. When in doubt, use cornstarch
Youâve already got the Dawn and vinegar cleaning mix, but you can strengthen it by adding cornstarch. We found this on a blog called Fabulessly Frugal, and they showed how well it gets rid of soap scum and minimizes the Dawn’s soapiness. (This should allow you to rinse fewer times in your cleaning process) Check it out on their blog!
7. Last resort, go with a dryer sheet
Many people donât know that dryer sheets have tons of other uses. All you need to do is dab some water on to a fresh dryer sheet, and then wipe down your bathroom to get rid of soap scum! It kind of feels like a miracle!
Thatâs going to complete our list of 7 ways to get rid of soap scum. We hope you enjoyed it, and let us know which one of these works best for you!
