Mom’s worried about dog while on vacation – son sends hilarious video to let them know it’s ok

When college student Garrett Johnson’s parents headed off on a week-long cruise, they left him in charge of the house. But more importantly, of the family dog, Oscar.

It’s a big responsibility to take on, especially if you’ve always had people around to help care for the dog. And sure, a college student knows how to feed and walk a pet, but the real responsibility is really in making sure the dog’s owners feel happy and comfortable on their getaway without having to worry. It appears that Garrett understood this well.

Mom and dad were understandably nervous because they had never left their dog alone for a whole week before and wanted to make sure he would be ok – well cared for, but also not too lonely or sad. No one wants to think about their pet moping around at home while they’re having fun. In fact, sadly, it’s a reason people even use not to travel.

The Johnsons made Garrett promise to make sure Oscar was ok and happy. And he did one better – he made them proof.

“Oscar is the funniest dog I know,” Garrett told The Dodo.

So he took that humor and made a video homage to their time together – proof that they were getting along. Not only that, but he wanted to show them that Oscar was eating, getting exercise, and even a kiss before bedtime – all set to the song “You Are The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne.

“She thought it was super funny and said she cried laughing,” Garrett said of his mom’s reaction to his masterpiece.

And we can see why.

The video begins with Garrett pretending to see his parents off on their trip, shutting the door behind them (a little hard, probably thanks to all the instructions he got before they left – that’s just parents for ya!).

But next, he looks at Oscara and asks what the pup wants to do.

And when we see Oscar’s near-constant skeptical face, it’s hard not to burse out laughing.

That’s either a look that says “uh, so HOW long are my real parents going to be gone?” or else “you are in for a hellish week, friend.”

But, luckily, Garrett has lots of fun planned, starting with every dog’s favorite activity – mealtime. The two appear to sit down to a nice dinner together at the family table, conversing like pals.

Of course, we’d be eager to know what The Johnsons thought about Oscar eating his meal at the table. Even the pup seems a little skeptical – if totally willing – to indulge.

After chowing down and having some laughs, the two relax and let their dinner settle a little.

But Oscar is still presumably thinking “what is all this?”

Or maybe that’s just his face – it’s full of personality!

Of course, the night doesn’t end there.

The pair moves on to movie night – and Oscar got to choose the film. The choices were limited to things a college guy wants to watch, but that’s ok.

Oscar chose the techo-thriller Nerve, perhaps because he just wasn’t in the mood for a buddy comedy (even one with a dog) since he was already making one.

Oscar seemed to enjoy movie night mostly for the snacks, which we can totally relate to.

While his treat is a minimal bite of potato chip, he seems satisfied.

And after that, it was time for bed.

Oscar is the first one up the basement stairs – and like a sweet, well-trained pup, he goes right to his bed to lay down (oh, if all dogs were so well-trained, how great would that be?!)

After a kiss from his babysitter/big brother, it’s lights out for the pair and FIN. The film is over.

In addition to sending the fresh cut to his parents, he also posted it on social media where it earned over 100k views on Facebook and is up to 78k views (with over 5,000 likes) on Twitter.

When The Dodo reached out to see how the two were handling their online fame as well as the Johnsons still being gone, Garrett assured everyone they continued having a great week.

“We’re chilling and just hanging out ’til [my parents] come back,” he said. “Life is good.”

Just don’t expect the same from your pet-sitter (but go ahead and travel anyway, if you can!).
