Southern husband tries his best to speak without his southern accent

The diversity of people across the U.S. is astounding. Not only do you have people from all over the world, but you can find U.S. citizens with distinct accents native to their area of the country. This diversity is what makes us strong as a country, if hard for others to understand at times.

Stephanie Shadrick recently challenged her southern husband, Brandon, in a YouTube video to speak without his accent. The results are hilarious.

The video, titled β€œMy husband Tries to speak without a southern accent,” had a simple enough premise, speak a simple phrase without using the accent Brandon has had for most of his life. While simple sounding, the video proved that it was harder than it sounded.

Being from Georgia, in the southeast U.S., it is understandable that Brandon had a heavy southern accent. In fact, most people who are born in the south tend to have that familiar southern drawl, where the words sound a little off to anyone used to hearing them pronounced differently.

In many cases, the first language of a person is what they tend to use for the rest of their lives, including their accent. There are instances of people changing their accent over time, but this is usually after many years living in another part of the country. You also have people, such as actors, who are trained to use another accent.

With the challenge declared, poor Brandon tried his best. All he had to do was say the phrase β€œThe dog licked the oil and everyone laughed” without using his southern accent.

At first, he uses his normal talking voice, accent, and all, which turns out to be a little boring. But then he switches to trying not to use his accent and the fun factor goes way up.

As he repeats the phrase, he tries to speak without his accent. He is fine until he gets to the word oil, where he stumbles. His wife tells him to do it again. Once again, he tries, stumbling at the word oil. At this point, Stephanie cannot contain her laughter and tells him to read it in English.

Brandon gets a chuckle out of this, but ever the dutiful husband, he gives it a try for a third time. Once he is finished, his wife makes another request:

β€œCan you say it smoothly?”

This leads to another, a smoother attempt by Brandon, which results in Stephanie proclaiming:

β€œThat’s choppy! That’s not smooth.”

At that, they both get a chuckle as Brandon tries to tell Stephanie that he is saying it as smoothly as he can. At least they love each other to look past such things as an accent. The video, which Stephanie posted on YouTube, has over 20.7 million views.
