After a girl drops a coin in a hat, an epic, orchestral flashmob begins – and people are mesmerized

Maybe you feel like you’ve seen enough flashmobs, but if you haven’t seen a Beethoven flashmob then you’re not done yet!

There’s something truly entertaining about watching these performances, even if you aren’t the online video type. All that synchronization, cooperation, joyful performance – it’s just fun! And if you’re lucky enough to be on the street when one goes down, you feel like you’ve been a part of something special.

This flashmob took place in May of 2012 in the city of Sabadell, Spain (north of Barcelona). And instead of dancers in hoodies, it all began with a man in a tuxedo.

Playing the upright base, he had a top hat set down in front of him to collect any gratuities people saw fit to give him.

It was 6 om in the Plaça de Sant Roc which means there were plenty of people walking around, children included.

And the real action begins when a young girl offers up some change to thank the musician for his efforts.

She stood by and listened with rapt attention.

Then, suddenly, another performer joined the bassist – she brought her cello.

Together, they begin playing a duet of Ludwig van Beethoven’s famous 1824 “Ninth Symphony,” specifically, the final (4th) movement known as “Ode to Joy.”

And joy is precisely what’s in store for the growing crowd!

The performers are members of the local Vallès Symphony Orchestra, so their talent is a delight to partake in (and something you’d usually have to pay to see).

But the performance isn’t just a duet. More performers join the pair – two violinists and a bassoonist!

Luckily, someone capable was filming the show, so there are beautiful shots of both the performers and the crowd as we see a little girl climb a lamp post to get a better look.

Both crowds get bigger as the audience and the orchestra both grow, the latter adding more violinists and some violists.

Finally, the conductor comes out!

The performance was designed to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the bank they’re playing in front of – Banco Sabadell. But the fact that it’s a commercial endeavor hardly spoils the fun.

And if anyone watching thought that the conductor would be the last surprise, just wait until you see what’s next!

Choirs! (Yes, plural.)

Nearly 100 people are now singing and playing, the vocalists joining in from the city’s Lieder choir, Amics de l’Ã’pera, and Coral Belles Arts choir.

And while you can have Beethoven without the brass, the sponsors chose not to. So out walk the brass AND percussion sections of the orchestra.

At this point, they’re loud enough to draw attention from the surrounding streets.

Some of the beauty of the video lies in the reactions of children, who not only find it fun to see music on the streets but who really respond to the beautiful symphony despite it being nearly 200 years old.

“Ode to Joy” isn’t just a familiar classical tune, it’s the music for the European Union’s official anthem as well.

People are now singing along with the choir and it’s enough to give anyone watching it goosebumps.

The grand finale of the piece is something you simply shouldn’t miss – so be sure to watch to the end of the video.

While it was no doubt an epic performance to be a part of, over 84 million people have watched the YouTube video over the last 8 years, solidifying it as a viral sensation.

Be sure to scroll down to watch the magic.

And make sure you can watch it with the volume on!
