Homeowner turns staircase into a wine cellar with these clever steps

With much of the world being put on pause, some people are getting quite creative with their free time! YouTube is the great teacher of all things DIY, and people are using their time well! Some projects are quite simple, but this one is incredible!

Murray Berrill decided to renovate some spaces in his sister’s house!

While many of us balk at the idea of large-scale home projects, Murray loves them! The idea of taking an old room and transforming it is great in theory, but for most, the end product is far from what was imagined!

Thankfully, Murray had some experience to fall back on.

More than just an average joe, Murray is a 58-year-old home builder and renovator who has a long history of incredible projects under his belt.

A project that resonates with almost everyone.

Most people have been drinking quite a bit more under the circumstances. Wine is good for you, right? All in the name of safety. Murray’s project had a wine lover in mind.

Helping out his sister, Murray and his company got to work with a new take on an old dream.

His sister had wanted a wine cellar for a long time. The only issue is that wine cellars require quite a bit of room and effort to build! His sister recruited him to take her dream and make it a bit more practical.

Thankful for the work in a tough time for some, Murray got to work!

With his construction company, Murray Berrill Constructions, they came up with an idea. Instead of digging down and out to make the wine cellar, what if they took something that was already there and remade it?

Looking around the home, their gaze settled on the staircase.

Unless you are Harry Potter, most people don’t use the underside of their staircase for much. Knowing there was potential, Murray decided to make a “wine cellar” inside of the staircase!

“I hate dead space and my clients love wine.”

Taking his time, he designed an entire drawer and bottle holder rig.

Included in the stairs were twelve wide and extended drawers, each fitted with bottle holders. Murray designed it in such a way that each drawer would hold two bottles across and six back! The final space would contain a total of 156 bottles of wine!

Installing the drawers along each step, precautions had to be taken to make sure it was structurally sound.

“There is a stud wall from the concrete slab to underneath each tread that runs down the middle of the stairs. An elephant could walk on it. That’s also where the drawer slides are fixed so that the draws are anchored to the slab to minimize vibrations.”

Compared to a full wine cellar, this is a low-cost fix!

With the supplies totaling $500 and the labor and time totaling $5400, the ending project was less than $6k! That is a reasonable price for a custom build staircase that stores over 150 bottles of wine!

Living in a small house, Murray loves to make use of every bit of space he has.

“So, you get real good at utilizing every bit of space. Necessity is the mother of invention. Just try to think out of the box and avoid dead space.”
