Barista at Starbucks studied opera in Italy – belts out glorious voice to prove it

Many artists, musicians, and actors are all too familiar with working hard to see their dreams realized. Some work two or three jobs, just to make ends meet and to have the freedom to pursue non-moneymaking ventures. Jason Berger is one of those artists.

Working at a pizza joint and a coffee shop, his coworkers had no idea that Jason was so talented!

Jason was working two jobs to support his passion. Spending time working as a Barista at a local Starbucks and an employee at Grotto Pizza, it is safe to say many of his coworkers had no idea Jason could sing so well!

Noticing a man’s Italian accent, Jason began conversing with him.

Working at his Starbucks in Wilmington, Delaware, a repeat customer named Gianluca Spinola came to get a drink with his wife. Having talked before, Spinola knew about Jason’s hidden talent.

“Jason [had previously] noticed my husband’s accent and mentioned that he studied opera in Italy (he’s conversant in Italian). My husband was shocked at how good his Italian is and he loves opera, so he asked him to sing! We were blown away at his talent.” [TODAY]

Suddenly breaking into song, Jason released his talent and rocked the room with his booming and resonating voice.

After some convincing, Spinola got Jason to sing a little for him. His wife, Kaylan Wetzel, pulled out her phone to record him. Obviously delighted, Spinola smiled and sang along with the belting barista. After posting the snippet to Facebook, Jason and his talent were no longer hidden, getting over 1k likes and 200 comments.

Kaylan knows talent when she sees it, having studying voice and musical theater.

In an interview with TODAY, she said:

“I know a good voice when I hear it and his is stellar! I did not expect it at all.”

We may not have studied like her, but most people can see his talent too!

While incredibly humble, Jason has studied in the music field and has a diploma in graduate vocal performance from the Peabody Conservatory of John Hopkins University.

Jason also has some dreams of his own. He said:

“My dream is to be a soloist at major opera houses across the globe, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and as musical theater is a passion of mine as well, I would love to be in a Broadway show.”

Jason also sings as the tenor section leader at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

More than just a song, a necessary part of humanity.

Jason also wanted to use his newfound status to express how important art is. He said:

“I hope the joy that people get from watching my video is a reminder that the arts are a necessity, not a luxury. The arts are what make us human, they heal people and they bridge divides and they bring light into a world that is so often filled with divisiveness and hate. This issue is personal for me. I am a bisexual man and I grew up with learning disabilities and I never fit in; the arts gave me a place where I could thrive and a place where I belonged.”
