Starving horse can’t contain her joy getting to run in field for 1st time
Animal cruelty isn’t limited to physically abusing animals. It also includes negligence or failure to provide a safe and healthy environment for them. Abandoning animals can also be considered as an act of cruelty.
When Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue received a call about a potential case of animal cruelty, they dropped everything to rush over and help them.
Their hearts broke when they reached Dover, NY.
There, they saw three horses that were in extremely bad shape.
Midnight, Rosie, and Britt showed clear signs of neglect.
They were malnourished.
They were thin and their ribs were visible. Even the way they walked showed their poor state. Each one looked like they suffered from anxiety.
The horses lived in a horrible place.
Amanda, a volunteer, shared:
“When I first met Rosie, she reached under the electric fence to get some grass. When I saw that, it broke my heart, I had to help her.”
The horses were placed under the care of LOHR. They were carefully loaded up and brought to their place. However, since they were in poor condition, the people from LOHR decided that it would be best for the horses to stay indoors first.
There, they were carefully monitored and given proper food. The horses were also given a bath, something they didn’t get in the previous place.
The volunteers in LOHR did their best to help the poor horses gain back their strength. Eventually, they were allowed to run around.
Everyone was excited for the big day.
They were eager to see how the horses would react to having so much space and grass.
Because of their previous experience, the horses lacked confidence. Instead of running around, they didn’t move a lot. They were just sniffing the grass.
A few moments later, though, they finally realized that they were free.
They started running all over the place. They were simply ecstatic.
The horses’ transformation was heartwarming.
Their hair became full, vibrant, and beautiful. They gained a ton of weight.
Plus, they were able to build up their confidence and their anxiety was gone.
“It’s refreshing to know that they’re safe now, they don’t ever have to worry about food or shelter again. They’re home and they’re healthy and they can stay that way,” Deanna, the owner of LOHR, shared.
Helping abused and neglected horses
When you see a horse or any other animal which you think is neglected or abandoned, don’t think twice about helping out. Call in a complaint to your animal control agency or local law enforcement. These people can only act if someone alerts them of a potential case.
Now, if you’re not comfortable doing that, you can call your local horse rescue which you know works with law enforcement. Share every detail you know and tell them everything you saw.
Also, don’t forget to tell them the exact address where the horse can be found. As much as possible, be precise. This will make rescuing the horses faster and easier. If possible, take photos or videos if it’s something your state allows. The images or footage you take can help law enforcement identify the horses you’re reporting. It’ll also help them determine how bad the situation really is.
