7-year-old crashes pro dancer’s video and shows him how it’s done

Matt Steffanina is one of the most sought-after hip hop dance teachers and choreographers in the country. He’s worked with the likes of Taylor Swift and has appeared on Ellen, The Tonight Show, and So You Think You Can Dance and in his spare time the LA-based 31-year-old is a DJ and producer.

But he’s not so big that he can’t learn a lesson or two from a 7-year-old.

Despite being posted only 2 weeks ago, Steffanina’s latest YouTube dance video already has over 1.6 million views. In it, the two dancers get down to Tones and I’s “Dance Monkey.” (You’ve probably heard the song even if you don’t recognize the band or song title – the official YouTube music video for it has over half a BILLION views.)

When we start off, Steffanina explains that he posted so many dance videos in 2019 that he’s practically run out of moves. That’s why he’s called in little ChaCha Shen – together they’re going to put together an “epic” routine to start off 2020. And Cha Cha is ready to roll, suggesting they incorporate backbends, leg holds, and splits (things only a 7-year-old still finds fun and easy).

Staffanina looks understandably nervous as he’s told in no uncertain terms “It’s gonna be really hard for you.”

As ChaCha sets up some of her first bits of choreography we can clearly see that she’s got some experience under her belt – this little girl can move! Steffanina is able to follow along until she pulls herself into a backbend and manages to stand up again from the same position.

Even though her partner falls on his back during the move, she still expects him to get back up – ChaCha has absolutely no mercy!

The good news is they make some compromises and get part of the routine down – and it’s looking good.

But next come the splits – something 7-year-olds can do a lot better than anyone else.

Cha Cha can hardly believe it when Steffanina shows her his half split and says that’s all he can do.

She tries to push him down but realizes that some people just can’t do the splits. (What can we say, it’s rough getting old, Cha Cha!)

To her credit, she does try to give him credit for getting down to the floor eventually, even if it is on his face.

“Put all of your weight into the ground,” she instructs.

“It doesn’t go into the ground,” Steffanina pleads.

Then ChaCha shows us what dedication is all about when she snaps back “It does if you try harder.”

After she forces him into 10 seconds of leg lifts (in which, to be fair, she proves he CAN do more if he just has someone push him harder) one of the world’s best choreographers asks the 7-year-old if she can just do the moves while he points at her.

Nope.

Too easy, says ChaCha.

Of course, the professional dancer does have something up his sleeve – a breakdancing arm balance! ChaCha is just impressed enough (though still giving off some disdain) as she says “ok” to his request to do that instead.

In the end, they change into their dance clothes and do manage to put on an amazing routine.
