Store employee asks 86-year-old widow out for dinner “date” so he won’t be alone on Christmas
We go to grocery stores to buy necessities like toiletries, snacks, canned goods, ready-to-cook meat, fruits and vegetables, and a whole bunch more.
These are supplies that could last for like a couple of days, a week, or even a month.
But apart from these things that could only last for a certain period of time, a grocery store is also a place where you could find kindness and friendship that lasts for a lifetime.
A not-so-merry Christmas.
One day, Ellie Walker, a young woman working at the British chain grocery store Sainsbury learned about the heartbreaking story of one of their loyal senior customers, Edwin Holmes.
The then 86-year-old widower’s wife passed away. That’s after their fruitful 45 years of happy marriage.
His family was far from home.
He also added that his daughter and grandchildren were all living in Australia that’s why they had no chance of spending the holidays together.
That simply meant Edwin was going to spend Christmas day and the rest of the holiday season by himself.
Ellie’s genuine care for their customers with or without the uniform made her do the unexpected.
The then 22-year-old hardworking grocery worker decided to do something about their loyal elderly customer’s predicament.
She offered Edwin a Christmas date.
The two shared a Christmas meal together and it was something that captured the hearts of many.
Both Ellie and Edwin were ecstatic about their Christmas date.
In fact, the latter even showed up that evening with a bouquet of fresh flowers while donning a fabulous suit.
It had been a long time.
Edwin also revealed that it was his first date in 55 years.
That’s why during their dinner, even though it was just a friendly date, he looked a little nervous because it’s been quite a long while since the last time he did it.
All those things tugged Ellie’s heartstrings.
She felt lucky for being able to make Edwin feel that he wasn’t alone in celebrating such an important occasion.
Their Christmas dinner meant a lot to her, just as much as it did to the widower.
“He is without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite customer. He is the cutest man and so chatty. I thought if it was my granddad and he was alone I would want someone to talk to him,” Ellie told The Sun.
Loneliness is dangerous.
This may sound cliché but it is true that “no man is an island.”
It’s not easy to live alone.
Even if someone tells you they prefer being alone and minding their own business, the time will still come when they’d need someone’s company.
In fact, loneliness could cause mental health problems like depression and anxiety.
That is why catching up with family members and friends is very important because it makes someone feel that you’re concerned about what’s going on with them.
Just like what Ellie did here when she offered a friendly Christmas date with Edwin.
It didn’t just make the widower feel valued, but it also made Ellie realize that good customer service shouldn’t end inside the grocery store.
Kindness on and off the clock
It was truly an unforgettable moment for both of them, a precious memory that they will never forget.
