Strangers help homeless teen get a room and reunite with his precious dog
Life isn’t the same for all of us. Having the capability to give our dogs the life they deserve is a blessing most of us take for granted.
This is a touching story about a homeless teen living under a bridge with his beloved dog.
When we truly love a pet, letting them go is probably the most painful thought we could think of. For a teen, the dog’s well-being was far more important than his heartbreak.
A young man from Tate County, Mississippi was left with no choice but to give up his four-month-old Rottweiler/German mix named Jada due to a financial crisis.
The best of friends lived under a bridge under a tent. He would leave Jada there as he step out to look for a job.
Unfortunately, the teen had no source of income and rations were finishing up fast. Because of this, he had to make a very painful decision.
One day, the young man found himself walking Jada toward Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter to surrender his dog.
“I was just sitting up here in the office and had just finished some cleaning and saw a young man walking across the field with looked like a dog in tow,” Interim Shelter Director Kris Robinson narrated.
However, the shelter was “so full” during that time. But upon hearing his story, the director pulled some strings to grant the request of the teenage boy.
She recalled that Jada was pinned to his human’s legs the whole time. It was easy to see that they definitely formed a special bond.
He then proceeded to explain that food was becoming harder to secure and this broke Robinson’s heart.
The owner then left Jada with a plastic bag containing a blanket and dog food. When Jada’s human left, she just laid on the floor as if she was just as heartbroken.
“For this young man to just be 17 and down on is luck, and no matter what problems he’s facing, he still took the time to walk her over and make sure somebody was going to take care of her. I think that says a lot about his character,” Robinson shared.
When he left, the shelter’s staff found themselves concerned about the teen. With the little information he wrote on the surrender form, they passed it to people who could possibly help locate him.
Unfortunately, he didn’t specify which bridge he lived under.
So with their desperation, the shelter posted the photo of Jada online.
It went viral as a lot of people were touched by the character of the young man despite his situation. People started talking about donating to help him get a room where he and Jada could stay.
Adoption requests for Jada also came rushing in, however, the shelter decided that it would be best to wait for the dog’s owner before making a move.
Not long after, the shelter posted an update.
“The homeless teenager who brought his baby to the shelter to surrender her because he couldn’t give her what she needs is getting the help he needs,” the post said. “He has a place to stay and will be soon getting his dog back.”
The animal shelter also detailed what they wanted in terms of the dog’s health.
They said that it would be best to have him spayed and also get her flea/tick and heart problem prevention good for a year. People were quick to help.
“If you’d like to donate, please do so through PayPal and use [email protected]. You can also donate for the young man monetarily or Walmart gift cards. I know he would appreciate the help, both for him and for his dog,” the shelter posted.
It was then reported by WREG that the teenager and Jada have finally reunited and are living with a local family who was kind enough to take him in as he sort his personal issues out.
“I hope his selfless actions have made people think about the animals in this community. They deserve a chance. They don’t deserve to be dumped anywhere,” the shelter wrote.
May this serve as a lesson to all of us to not take care for our beloved pet animals for granted. And when push comes to shove, dumping them anywhere is not an option.
