Stray cats are famous for their survival skills. For example, they know how to scourge for food. They are able to find warm shelter when necessary.
In spite of all this, we cannot romanticize being strays. They lead difficult lives. They have to deal with a variety of uncertainties. including where to get their next meal.
Thus, every time a stray cat finds a home is a joyous occasion.
One particular cat’s adoption story has been making the rounds on social media for the last month. Like similar stories, this one warms the heart. But what makes theirs stand out is that their love story started mischievously.
Their story begins in front of a small grocery store in Mexico. Regulars know that everyday a white cat hangs out by the porch. He does not bother anyone. He just waits for the opportunity to catch a generous animal lover’s attention.
One day, Tania Sants was on her way to the store. She immediately sees the cat and affectionately calls him “Conejo” (which is Spanish for rabbit). She giggles, approaches the furry one, and pets him.
Conejo quickly signals that Tania should follow him into the store. While inside the store, he goes straight to the cat food section. He stares at the food. He then looks at Tania as if to signal that she should know what she should buy.
Tania picks up a food pouch from the rack. Conejo paws at it. He confirms that the particular cat food she is holding is what Conejo-approved.
Although a stray cat, Conejo is extremely respectful. He knows that one cannot get any items from the store without paying for them first. So, he waits until his sponsor pays for the items before he leaves her side.
Tania goes to the same store at another time. Before she goes inside, she searches for her feline buddy but could not find him. However, when Tania enters the store, she finds a surprise waiting for her. Conveniently hanging out in the cat food section is Conejo!
Tania decides to do some investigating to see if Conejo has a human. After asking for some information from the shop keepers, she finds out that Conejo regularly visits the store to ask customers for treats. No one knows where he lives or if anyone takes care of him.
Determined to find out more, she secretly follows him after giving him treats. What she saw next broke her heart. The cat sat by the roadside making it clear that the street is his home.
In The Dodo, Tania shares that she has decided to take Conejo home. She is no stranger to having cats around. She takes care of another furry buddy together. Together, they make a sweet family.
After their story went viral, Tania decided to set up Conejo El Gato, a page dedicated to sharing more about the clever cat. As of today, over a thousand people follow the page.
Truly, this pair has touched the hearts of many.
