Some of the best friendships found in nature are between humans and dogs. There has always been a connection and bond between our two species. It’s really a beautiful thing the way we can come together even without a shared verbal language.

Dogs also seem to be a very good judge of character in humans. It seems that quite regularly dogs are able to sniff out who is a friend and who is a foe better than humans can. The little puppy in this story was able to sniff out right away when he found a very special human friend.

Two officers from the LAPD Hollywood division spot a tiny puppy while on patrol.

This tiny little guy was all alone and for reasons not fully understood, seemed to sense that these two officers were friendly. The dog did not appear to have an owner or mother anywhere near them. It was just a stray dog that began following the two officers around.

Dog takes a liking to Officers Mercado and Tavera

The dog followed the two officers as they walked along Hobart Boulevard. What it was about these two that drew his attention isn’t known, but everyone involved is glad that it happened.

Since the dog began following them on Hobart Boulevard, the officers decided to name him Hobart.

Hobart was taken back to the police station.

The officers posted photos and videos of Hobart and began posting them to the LAPD Hollywood Division Twitter account. Hobart is a rather photogenic little puppy so naturally, the posts were a big hit online.

The two officers were certain that the dog was a stray and not just lost. They responded to someone on Twitter and noted that Hobart’s original owner was no longer able to care for him.

His owner was unable to care for him any longer and was attempting to give him up, we took him in and he has since been given to @ghettorescue to be put up for adoption!

Hobart is adopted by Officer Mercado.

Hobart took a real liking to Officer Mercado and those feelings were reciprocated. Eventually, Officer Mercado decided that instead of handing Hobart over to the rescue center, he should be the one to adopt the little guy.

Shelter posts an update on Hobart.

The shelter would later post an update that came right from Officer Mercado.

“Update on Hobart (GRFF name Fidzgit) he’s the most loving and lively puppy. He loves all of his puppy cousins and will chew on his toys for hours. He’s still learning potty training and loves the outdoors/play time in the grass!” reported his dad.

Hobart is loving life in his new home.

We will likely never know what caused Hobart to start following the two officers that day. What was it about Officer Mercado that made Hobart realize this was a new friend? Sometimes a connection is just made between two beings and we think that’s exactly what happened here.

The result of their encounter that day is that Hobart has a loving forever home, and Officer Mercado has a loyal new companion who never wants to leave his side.
