Loyal dog refuses to leave his injured friend’s side until help arrives

They often say that a dog is a man’s best friend, but four-footers most definitely know how to look after each other as well. The following heartwarming story is a perfect example of true love, friendship, and loyalty.

Life as a stray dog is anything but easy, and these poor canines have to face dangerous situations and horrible living conditions every single day.

A couple of months ago, one of the stray dogs that were roaming around in Iguatu, a municipality in Brazil, was struck by a vehicle. There’s no sign of the person who hit the dog, as he took off and it was considered a hit and run. Even though the dog was struck on a relatively popular road, help didn’t arrive anytime soon.

It’s not clear just how many stray dogs and cats live in Brazil, but there are definitely hundreds of thousands of them roaming around in the favelas, the poorer urban areas of the country. The World Animal Protection organization roughly estimates that there are no less than 30 million stray four-footers, although that number is likely quite conservative. In any case, the situation is extremely severe.

When the four-footer was struck by the car, his loyal friend who wasn’t injured laid beside him the entire time, waiting for help.

A passerby took his or her smartphone and filmed the footage, which quickly went viral around the country and even worldwide.

According to local reports, the dog remained on the street for an entire night before help arrived.

It was a local non-profit animal organization that came to the rescue. They regret the fact that they could only help the following day, but they had no available vets that day – their resources and manpower are rather limited, which means that they can’t help out as much as they would like.

“We were unable to go to the location on Sunday afternoon because we had no available vets, but on Monday morning we received news that both of them were in the same place,” nurse Marina Assuncao said to Daily Star.

The nurse was with a friend, and both of them immediately tried to take the four-footer to the clinic, but his four-footer friend was very protective.

“I went there with my friend, who is a vet, and we took the injured dog to a clinic.”

When Marina approached the two of them, the non-injured canine friend definitely didn’t like the idea at first and did his best to scare Marina away. He started to become aggressive, but Marina and her friend figured it was best to try and win his trust. The nurse still recalls how caring the other four-footer was, and it was just a heartfelt sight to behold.

“It stayed close to the injured dog the whole time, it licked it and ran its paws over its body as if it were trying to revive it.

And when the other dog finally allowed help, he didn’t leave his injured buddy’s side for one bit.

“When we put the injured pooch in the car, the other one had already jumped on the seat and stayed with its pal right up to the moment it received treatment in the clinic.”

At this time, it’s still unclear how the injured dog is currently doing. Of course, he was provided with plenty of food, water, and appropriate medication, but he still has to undergo some medical scans to see if there are any (severe) fractures.

Marina reported that she’s absolutely blown away by the actions of the other pooch, nothing how caring and compassionate the whole experience was.

“We are not sure if they are siblings,” she said. “They must be the same age, between nine months and one year old, but we were taken by the companionship displayed by the other dog towards the injured one the whole time, from the moment of the accident to the arrival at the clinic and now at their temporary home.”

The animal organization, Adota Iguata, hopes to raise enough funds via online crowdfunding for further treatment and to find this adorable pair a warm and loving home.
