It’s been said by many different people — President John F. Kennedy, Poet Maya Angelou, Civil Rights Leader Fannie Lou Hamer— and in many different ways that one is not truly free until all are free.

A stray dog in Russia must have also agreed with this sentiment because he went out of his way to free a pit bull that was tied up by his owner outside of a store.

According to Dmitriy Timchenko who witnessed and recorded the act, the pit bull had only been tied to the fence by his leash for a short while.

The pit bull’s owner was inside a store shopping.

But the stray didn’t see a pup patiently waiting for his owner to finish shopping and retrieve him. He saw a fellow comrade shackled by an oppressor.

The stray dog was free and was determined to see his fellow dog free as well in a sweet act of solidarity.

“I’ve seen this stray dog around town many times,” Timchenko told The Dodo. “He always uses the crosswalk to cross the street. He’s a very smart dog.”

Timchenko then witnessed something remarkable.

He saw the stray dog using his teeth to try to loosen the knot used to secure the pit bull to the railing.

The stray dog kept up his efforts for at least a minute or two until the knot was loosened and the leash was freed.

The pit bull who had been tied up kind of looked confused and just sat there.

So, the stray dog grabbed his leash and led him along.

The pit bull was ready to take the new friend that he rescued on an adventure.

That’s when Timchenko and his friend intervened. They ran over to make sure that the pit bull didn’t run off with the stray.

Then they went to go retrieve the owner from inside the store.

“We went into the store and called the owner on the loudspeaker,” Timchenko said. “She came outside to get her dog.”

The stray didn’t realize that the pit bull wasn’t in distress or in need of saving.

But the sweet stray’s heart was in the right place.

The pit bull was perfectly happy waiting for his owner and living the life of an indoor dog.

Timchenko’s video ended up going viral and was viewed more than 352,000 times on Facebook.

“Omg, that’s so funny! I would have loved to see this video end with the dog owner taking them both home!” wrote one Facebook commenter.

“Awe I would have taken it home with me. That’s just too cute and would have made a great addition to our fur family,” said another.

“He wanted to free that dog like himself! He knew that leash was holding him there. So he start working for his buddy’s escape. Wow, animals always teach us something. Caring for others is definitely on the list,” and another.
