Stray dogs beg boys to help save drowning friend in desperate trouble
Trevor Costelloe is a 21-year-old YouTube vlogger and he’s no stranger to exploring urban areas.
Often he travels around his hometown of San Diego, visiting abandoned structures and sharing his adventures with the internet. In February 2019 one of his trips took an unexpected turn when he decided to take a spontaneous outing to an old abandoned water park nearby.
Accompanied by his friend Dave, the two documented the eerie stillness of the long-forgotten amusement grounds.
Costello admits in the video that there isn’t a lot of information as to why the park was abandoned but had remained that way for the last decade or so.
It wasn’t until they were greeted by two stray dogs that things truly took a turn.
In the video, the two boys wander around the park, through thickets of overgrown brush and broken down slides. They think they’re alone, but quickly learn they have company. In the distance, they spot a giant white husky running back and forth near some old slides. The dog continuously looks in the direction of the boys, as if attempting to get their attention.
After a moment of hesitation about the foreign dog, the boys concede. They call to it and approach cautiously.
Within a matter of moments another dog appears, this time a pit bull. They are now matched, two and two, in the old park.
However, instead of greeting the boys with aggression, the dogs silently implore them to follow them over to an old pool. And much to the boys’ shock, there is a third dog trapped inside. The third dog paddles franticly back and forth, struggling to swim for its life. If the boys didn’t intervene at this exact moment, it was clear this third dog would drown!
Trevor shouts when he realizes what is going on:
“Bro, we gotta save that dog!”
No sooner does Costelloe leap into action.
He runs to the pool and grabs the helpless dog by the paws. The dog, tired from swimming, is weakened significantly by the event. A few tense moments pass but he is successfully able to pull the dog from the water and back onto the safety of land. Immediately, the other two dogs greet their friends in fits of wags and licks.
The boys are both moved by the entire episode. Costelloe remarks:
“I cannot believe that happened. We barely saved that dog. If we didn’t come here to film today and explore this place, that dog honestly would have drowned. He barely had any strength left.”
After the rescue, the other two dogs are visibly happy to have their third partner back and safe. A few more moments linger before the pack disappears back into the bushes to carry about their business.
The pit bull stays behind to take an extra moment to thank the boys for their service. And the boys are left almost speechless, musing on the turn their day took.
Definitely a case of the right place, right time.
