Two stray dogs sit in parking lot, begging anyone who passes to help them

Stray dogs are such a sad sight. There’s no one to love them or even feed them and they don’t have any reliable shelter in severe weather.

So when 18-year-old Destiny Vasquez saw two starving dogs in the parking lot of a Brownsville, Texas fast-food restaurant, she knew she had to do something.

Dozens (even hundreds) of people simply passed by them all day, but Vasquez’s heart couldn’t bear to just drive away.

“I was in the drive-thru, I saw one of the dogs and said, ‘Oh my gosh! This dog has no home,” she told The Dodo. “I was crying and crying. I called my mom, and I said, ‘Mom, I have to get this dog.’ I didn’t know there were two dogs at the time.”

The sweet black pup approached her car when she made eye contact, begging for food.

The video she took – which you can find down below, hurts our hearts to watch.

Luckily, Vasquez had more than just a sympathetic ear in her mom, Jessica Marin. Marin had rescued many stray pups from the South Texas streets and knew just what to do.

She drove to the restaurant to meet her daughter only to discover there were actually two pals there living together in the lot. In fact, people knew about them and had done nothing to help them.

“I spoke to an employee who said the dogs had been here a long time,” Marin told The Dodo.

(In case you weren’t aware, it’s easy to Google rescue organizations in your area – not all of them will come rescue a dog, but a few phone calls could make a huge difference!)

Marin got some photos of the two pups and sent them to a friend – Leslie Hennings – who posted them on Facebook. Hennings often shares stories of animals in need.

Hennings posted the photos with the plea on June 15th:

“They literally begged to be taken, but they weren’t. They go up to every car that passes by in hopes to find a home. It’s been weeks. Tonight it will be another night in the parking lot. It will be another night in the streets. These two only have each other and desperately need rescue together! Please help network them for rescue and foster!”

Since then it’s been shared over 700 times.

A little attention to their plight was all it took.

Ana Teran, a volunteer for Animal Aid Brigade in Houston, saw the post and knew she had to act.

“As soon as I saw it, I just couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t let it go. I just said, ‘How can I get these dogs? If I have to rent a car, I will, to get them,’” she told The Dodo.

The generous animal lover rented a car and drove for hours to pick them up from Marin, who had managed to get them into the safety of her car.

Teran described her first meeting with the sweet dogs as love at first sight:

“I was so excited to see them! They were just the cutest,” Teran said. “They wanted love so desperately. They were so friendly. They were not fearful or timid. They had big smiles; they were so excited. They had no idea what was going on, but they were so happy.”

She played them some music and talked to them like the good boys and girls they are the whole way back.

“I told them, ‘I want to show you life can be fun, and I want you to know everything will be fine,'” she said. “The pair fell asleep so soundly and relaxed for the first time in a very long time.”

Teran is now fostering the bonded pair in the hopes of training them up so they can find their forever home together. The females – Patty and Pepper – will be up for adoption as soon as they’re ready to be good pets.

“This is just the beginning of their journey and their adventures,” Teran said. “I’m just really excited for them.”

Vasquez is so glad she made the call that saved the sweet, starving dogs and put them on the road to a better life.

“I’m so happy. It feels so good to know they’re in good hands and off the street.”
