Stray Poodle hears strangers approaching and shields sister to keep her safe

Rescue organization Hope for Paws receives a lot of calls about abandoned and stray dogs living in poor conditions.

When they received a call regarding two dogs living under the I-5 freeway in California, they sprung into action right away.

Hope for Paws doesn’t just rescue dogs, they also raise money for their care, including veterinarian needs and transportation to new forever homes.

They are very dedicated to their work.

The dogs were living under the freeway.

Hope for Paws founder Eldad was joined by his friend Vanessa for this important rescue. They located the dogs and devised a plan to bring them in.

The dogs had been surviving for weeks off scraps of food people would leave for them. When Eldad and Vanessa found them, they weren’t aggressive but they did appear to be very scared.

Eldad and Vanessa win over their trust.

The fastest way to win over a stray or abandoned dog is with food. The two rescuers brought some hamburgers for the two dogs and began to try and gain their trust.

A special bond requires special bravery.

The two sibling dogs seemed very bonded to one another. The older brother would use his larger body to shield his younger sibling from the rescuers.

He was scared but like a very good boy, he wanted to protect his little sister from any potential danger.

Rescuers were gentle with the duo.

In a situation such as this, you can’t just scoop up the dogs in need and bring them back to the shelter.

It takes time and patience to win their trust and let them know you aren’t there to hurt them.

The two rescuers sat in piles of garbage under the freeway until they were sure the two dogs were calm and would submit to being rescued.

After a while, the dogs seemed to understand that their rescuers were there to help them.

Time for names and makeovers

While rescuing dogs in need can be serious business, cleaning them up, feeding them, and allowing them to be happy again can be pretty fun.

The two dogs were named Pepsi and Cola, given a bath, and had their matted fur shaved down.

After some food and their makeover, the two dogs were pretty excited to get to just run around and be dogs.

They were no longer the scared two pups found under the freeway.

Pepsi and Cola would need forever homes.

They were sent to a foster home via the Maltese Rescue California organization and a forever home was found for them after that.

It would be a truly happy ending for two dogs that had been in a scary situation. The two siblings will get to be together as well.

“Usually bonded pairs have grown up together and can be siblings or non-siblings,” Rescue in Style explains.

“Truly bonded animals have a positive and healthy relationship and it can be detrimental to separate them. When apart, one or both can become stressed, anxious, or even depressed without the other around. Keeping them together ensures they are both happy and relaxed during what can be a stressful situation.”
