These street dogs rescued each other when no one else could
The number of homeless animals is spiking because of the pandemic. Families are moving to places where there are lesser chances of them getting infected by the virus, thus resulting in their homes and pets being left behind. We will see stray dogs wandering mostly on the streets in search of food and water.
These two street dogs, though, had each other’s backs.
When California resident Danny Spanks saw a stray dog wandering around the neighborhood, he knew he was lost.
Right and then and there, he decided he needed to save him.
The dog showed signs of being afraid of humans and Spanks tried his best to win the pooch’s heart.
He’d toss him some treats and food, but he wouldn’t go unless Spanks would back-off and give him some space. The dog would walk away whenever Spanks tried to go near him.
These were all clear signs that the dog was aloof when it came to humans.
Spanks did the same thing day after day.
He’d try to convince the dog there was no reason to be afraid because he was there to help him.
There was a time that he got really close to the dog, and the pup finally took treats from out of his hand. Spanks became determined to win the dog’s heart. When he did, he named him Francis.
As it turned out, Francis hadn’t been on the streets alone.
Spanks heard that Francis would run around the neighborhood with another loose dog companion, and knew he had another set of paws to rescue.
One night, he was surprised when he saw Francis playing around with his dog friend – a huge tan one!
Eventually, he learned that the big tan dog (whom he named Howard) was abandoned by his owners.
It’s hard to pet two dogs at the same time, but it didn’t faze him. Spanks bravely took the challenge head-on.
He kept on giving them food – not only because it was a way to get close to them, but also because they needed to be fed regularly so they wouldn’t starve.
His efforts finally paid off!
With the help of some mouth-watering treats, Howard eventually gave in. He was then able to give him some good belly rubs and pets.
Funny, because it almost looked like Francis got jealous. Finally, he then allowed Spanks to pet him as well!
Spanks knew it was time to get these dogs to safety.
With the improvements the dogs had shown, he was convinced that, soon enough, he would be able to rescue both Francis and Howard.
So, Spanks tried to do what was necessary – he tried to lure both dogs into his vehicle by throwing a delicious cheeseburger on the car seat.
Howard immediately jumped right in, but not Francis.
He was successful in bringing Howard home, but he was still determined to take Francis next.
The next day he planned to return with Howard, hoping that Francis would come once he saw his buddy. As it turned out, however, there was no need to make that trip.
The next day Spanks went to check on Howard only to discover Francis wagging his tail in the driveway!
Francis was able to track their location a few blocks away from where he and Howard hung out.
Francis was still afraid of being leashed, but Spanks was glad to see the dog just lie down in his driveway. The next day was an even greater shock because Francis decided to walk around his yard.
Spanks was then able to put him with Howard together in a kennel where they were happy to be reunited and finally feeling that they belonged.
Spanks loved the dogs’ company, but he needed to make a hard decision.
The environment that Spanks has couldn’t handle catering two large dogs like Francis and Howard, so he took Francis to a much larger rescue organization – one that has more means to take care of him.
On the other hand, Howard is still with him in Bakersfield and ready for adoption through A SafeFurr Place Animal Rescue.
While Spanks worked hard and went out of his way to help these two dogs, it’s clear to everyone that Francis and Howard saved each other!
