Struggling artist transforms old tires into beautiful beds for stray animals
Digging through piles of used tires all day may not sound like a dream job to most people, but that’s where mindset and perspective are everything.
“The only way to do a great job is to love what you do.”
And Amarildo Silva loves what he does because he’s helping thousands of animals get super cozy.
Silva, who is from Campina Grande in Brazil, left his day job in retail so he could pursue a passion project of his. Like many people his age, this young man has an entrepreneurial spirit and wants to be his own boss.
And what better way to get your business off the ground than by starting right at the bottom, digging your way through garbage!
It turns out that Silva has the right idea because used tires are quite the rubber goldmine. Their shape and sturdiness make them the perfect raw material for upcycling into tiny little beds.
The struggling artist was inspired to create these amazing pet beds after he noticed stray dogs in his neighborhood were curling up inside old tires for warmth and protection.
So he decided to make it more comfortable for them by creating a special little home for dogs and cats to sleep in.
Since tires don’t decompose and they leach heavy metals into the soil, finding ways to reuse them is the environmentally responsible thing to do.
By getting the tires off the streets, Silva is actually helping to get dogs and cats off the street (quite literally), too.
He paired together his love of animals with upcycling, and all that extra trash is now extra cash in his pocket.
He’s upcycling tires into new and better things!
This young Brazilian found a brilliant way to turn trash into a profitable business. And lucky for him, there’s a seemingly unlimited supply of old, wanted tires growing like weeds in the concrete jungle. What he doesn’t find on the street he receives as a donation.
So how does he transform the tires? First, he gives it a good scrubbing and then cuts them down to size. Then he paints and decorates them with bright, pastel colors.
Some beds are even personalized with the pet’s name if Silva knows what it is ahead of time. However, even the ones without names still get the seal of approval from his furry customers.
As for the mattress, Silva makes the fluffy bedding by hand. He also made sure to include carrying straps on the side, to make it easier for people to transport them.
After he made his first tire into a bed and saw how cute it was, he made it his mission to create as many as possible – and he did, to the tune of over 6,000!
These handcrafted, eco-friendly beds have become popular with pet owners from around the world.
Once Silva’s creativity was let loose, he came up with other ideas for upcycling tires, like turning them into recycling bins and planters. He uses the “same old tired story” as a talking point to educate the community about sustainability practicies.
But when it comes to the little floofs, they’re just grateful to have a bed they can sleep in.
This young man has done his good deed for the day…and the rest of his life, actually. Here’s hoping he’ll come up with more creative ways to help both the planet and animals!
