Architecture student spends $10,000 transforming an old school bus into a tiny home

A lot of people dream of owning a really huge house in the city. Some even want to have an enormous pool on their property. Others aspire to have indoor gyms and saunas right in the comfort of their own homes.

Caleb Brackney, a Tennessee-based student, had a different house design in mind.

Instead of saving up to buy a really big house, he built his own tiny home. He worked hard to turn his dream into a reality.

It started out with a plan.

Caleb knew that building his own home isn’t easy. Apart from the hard work, he knew that he also needed to be financially prepared.

He started saving money.

He set his target savings to $10,000. And right after hitting that, he proceeded to the next step in his plan.

He logged into Facebook and there, he found a 1995 Thomas International school bus.

It was worth $3,000. He bought it right away and was left with $7,000 to spend on turning the school bus into his tiny home.

Caleb was very careful in designing the bus.

He considered not just the cost but style and comfort, too. He’ll be living in it for quite some time so he needed it to be perfect for him and his lifestyle.

The tiny home has everything Caleb needs to live a comfortable life.

He is quite tall so he decided to add an interesting cut out in his roof to achieve more space. He also installed a 6-foot-long bar. He uses this spot as a keyboard stand and desk.

He has a dedicated area for guests.

Even though it’s a tiny home, Caleb made sure that there’s a spot for his family and friends when they come over. His sectional couch can actually be turned into a bed for his guests. Although it’s not big, it can be considered a treat when you’re in a tiny home.

Caleb paid close attention to every detail of his home.

He didn’t just focus on the materials used on making the bus but he was thoughtfully considered the colors, textures, and fabrics inside his home. And looking at the results, the student clearly knows what he’s doing.

Even with a tight budget, he was able to make a really beautiful home.

Instead of buying new pieces of his tiny house, he purchased secondhand furniture pieces. One good example is the old utility trailer he found. He turned it into an 8-foot long rooftop deck!

His favorite features are the countertops.

He found old semi-truck beds on Facebook Marketplace and worked hard on sanding them down.

He plans on traveling across the country after he graduates.

Living in his tiny home will help him save money. He’ll use his savings to travel and work as he goes.

For now, his tiny home is parked on his parents’ property. He’s enjoying his time with them while being able to live in his own home.
