Students gift a car to their dedicated teacher who commutes 2 hours every day one way to get to school

Teachers might be one of the most underappreciated professionals in the world.

But despite the lack of support and the long hours, teachers still get up early in the morning to do the noblest of things – to mold the minds and hearts of future generations.

Their struggles are not unnoticed, however, especially when it comes to the people they interact with every day. So when these students found out that they can help one of their teachers, they didn’t hesitate to jump into action.

Julio Castro, a math teacher from the Yula High School Boys Division, thought it was just a normal day.

For Castro, the struggles of being a teacher don’t start at school. It begins in his 2-hour journey from his house and we’re just talking about one way.

He shared with ABC7 that his commute time might be extended if he misses his bus. That would be another half an hour or an hour added to the journey.

Despite the challenges, Castro makes sure he shows up for work.

Unbeknownst to him, however, is that the boys at his school are also working for him. That summer, a group of students raised more than $30,000.

They got the money by asking for donations from various organizations like Galpin Motors and a nonprofit organization called The Change Reaction.

When he got to school that day, Castro was moved to tears.

They made a short program for him to show how much the student body appreciated his efforts and dedication to changing their lives for the better.

Then, after the program, the students showed Castro the gift they have been keeping for a while – a 2019 Mazda CX-3.

One might consider this as a gift, but for the students, it was just a way to pay him back.

One of the students shared that Castro went above and beyond when it comes to teaching. He said that Castro would always make sure that he understood the material.

He even sits down with his students on lunch breaks and after school. The students said that he could’ve been on the bus on the way home but instead, he stays a bit just to support the students.

It was a real game-changer for Castro.

The car will give him more time to spend with his girlfriend and kids. He excitedly shared his proposed schedule of dropping his kids off in the morning and coming early to school with time to spare.

He said that the time he saves can be used on lesson plans and other preparations for the day. And while the traffic can be a bit difficult in the evening rush hour, he said that at least this time he can make it back just in time for dinner.

As if the car was not enough, the students also surprised their teacher by paying off a year of his gas and car insurance.

Castro joined the Yula faculty around 2019. He worked as a private tutor before getting his teaching post. He teaches Algebra, Informal Geometry, Intermediate Algebra, Statistics, and Microbiology.
