Administrator prohibits students from flying the flag, they show up waving them on their trucks the next day

Schools typically have good reason to enforce certain policies. It’s in the interest of protecting everyone, keeping things in order, and teaching people simple consideration.

Dress codes exist for a reason, the same is true for what items you shouldn’t bring to campus. For the most part, students don’t have much to dispute about these policies. However, some students at Franklin County High school weren’t too happy with a new policy from their administrator.

You see, their administrator made the decision to ban the displaying of the American flag on vehicles within the school. Being a symbol of freedom and pride for many people, this obviously didn’t sit well with the students. No surprise, their answer was to protest.

But a simple schoolyard protest with signs wouldn’t cut it. They thought bigger.

“My son called me from school saying that he saw an administrator around his truck and is now being called to the office”

-A student’s mother

The ban was motivated when an administrator described the use of flags on vehicles as “offensive,” perhaps feeling that a symbol of national pride and freedom shouldn’t be a “decoration”.

Undeniably, it’s even unusual that the flag is allowed on walls and poles within the school, but not on cars. Surely having it on your car isn’t any more disrespectful than having it on the wall?

The administrator argued that having the flag attached to your car was “disruptive” and potentially “offensive”.

Perhaps the students noted that the country uses the flag as a decoration quite often to begin with. Why should this be any different? The flag is used on clothes and as decoration on all sorts of things as well.

Many other students couldn’t accept the reasoning behind the ban on the flag. The American flag is a patriotic symbol. Surely having one on your car isn’t any different from all the other ways people already use it?

They took it upon themselves to let the school administration know what they thought. They organized the protest. Though this protest wasn’t happening in a courtyard or the parking lot.

For this is the land of the free and the home of the brave

Three students, in particular, were the ones who the administration confronted over the issue. Due to the resulting outcry towards things, more people rallied behind the three of them.

Seems democracy is far from dead.

They planned the protest for a Tuesday. When the day came, a caravan of students in their cars arrived, all bearing the American flag proudly on their cars. It was an impressive feat of organizing. The cherry on top was one student that had his car horn mimic the notes of “Dixie”.

The students weren’t alone in their feelings. From parents and other members of the town came a similar outcry for banning the American flag. Seems like much of the town shared and supported their sentiment.

The school apologized for the questionable policy, and to the boys. It delights us to know that there are still young people in the world, who don’t know fear when it’s time to speak up against a flawed system.

Also, it’s hard to double down on your policies when 25 pickup trucks start parading outside your office.
