Stylist cries when last-minute customer leaves a $5,800 tip for a $27 haircut

The global pandemic has had a negative impact on hair salons, stylists, barbers, and the numerous other people who work in the industry. It’s been a rough time for a lot of businesses, but they’ve been hit particularly hard.

Many shops have been forced to close down completely, while others are struggling to keep their heads above water. Countless businesses are just waiting and hoping for their luck to change. That’s exactly what happened at a barbershop in Denver recently, however.

A man asks to get a haircut without an appointment.

As salons began to reopen, many people who were desperate to get their haircut began making appointments. Ilisia Novotny is a stylist who works at Floyd’s 99 Barbershop in Denver. She told Good Morning America about a rather generous walk-in customer she served recently.

“I had 15 minutes left in my shift, and he walked up and asked if I could squeeze him in,” Novotny told Good Morning America. “I know how many people are desperate for a haircut right now so I didn’t mind.”

As Novotny was cutting the man’s hair, they talked about how difficult it has been not knowing if the shop was going to be able to reopen.

“I’m a single mother,” she said. “It’s been rough the last few months not knowing what’s going to happen, not knowing when we might reopen so I could go back to work.”

Novotny would even say that her son asked her how the family will pay their bills if she can’t go to back to work.

“My son was like, ‘If you don’t have a job, how are we gonna pay bills?’”

“The tip is not a mistake.”

The total cost of the man’s haircut was only $27. Customary tipping on such a bill is only a few dollars. The man tipped much more than that, however. As he was leaving, the man made sure that Novotny knew the amount he’d entered as a tip was not a mistake.

“Just so you know,” he said, “the tip is not a mistake.”

The man tipped an additional $2,500 to the stylist. That amount of money can make a real difference in someone’s world, especially during a time when there is so much uncertainty. Novotny was over the moon when she discovered what the man had done. After months of uncertainty, she now had a little security.

“I was just in complete shock,” Novotny told ABC.

“This came at a crucial time for me,” she added. “He didn’t want to make a big show of it, but it’s truly a blessing, and I have so much appreciation. I still can’t believe it.”

Not the only person from the barbershop to receive a sizeable tip.

The generous man didn’t just decide to give the stylist a gigantic tip, he decided to help the whole store! He tipped the receptionist $500 and left another $1000 for the General Manager. As for the 18 other people employed at the barbershop, the man left $100 each for them.

“For him to come back and give out such generous tips to all my colleagues really just left me speechless,” Novotny said. “I can’t even tell you how much this means to us all.”

The man obviously wanted to help a business that had been going through tough times through no fault of their own. He had the ability to help and so that’s what he did. It’s a truly heartwarming story.

“The support we’ve seen since being able to reopen some of our shops where regulations allow has been astounding,” the barbershop posted. “This is just one great story from one of our Denver shops. Thank you to our communities for supporting us during this time.”
