Thanks to Dr. Parry, tens of thousands of children have had life-saving and life-improving operations.

This alone is enough to make him an amazing human being.

But he’s really gone the extra mile with the kids for one simple reason.

He always does the same thing. Before a child goes into surgery, Dr. Parry asks the children or their parents if they have a particular interest, like a cartoon or sports or a superhero or anything else.

So after the surgery, Dr. Parry uses his artistic skills to paint a picture related to the kids’ interest on their bandages/dressings.

“Basically, every child I’ve operated on, ten thousand or whatever, have gotten a unique dressing.” – Dr. Robert Parry.

When the kids look down at their bandages after their operations, they see the drawings that Dr. Parry has added to them. They’re always delighted to see these.

To an adult, it may not sound like much. But to a kid, it makes a huge difference. Instead of a scar, children have something else to focus on after their operations.

Dr. Parry even has a favorite drawing. One time, a kid asked for a Brownie the Elf. When the kid’s dad saw the elf, he was so amazed that he really wanted a Brownie the Elf Dressing of his own.

The dad didn’t go as far as to ask, but Dr. Parry then went to the effort to draw another one just to make the father happy.

The doctor also finds that drawing on his patient’s dressings have made him into a better surgeon.

That’s because they make him realize that the kids aren’t “just something I’ve operated on. You’re actually a human being.”

Dr. Parry is nothing short of a hero. All you need to do is hear him talk for just a few seconds to realize that he’s 100% dedicated to the children that he cares for.

He also states that one of the most rewarding parts of his job is talking to the child’s family after the surgery.

Akron’s Children’s Hospital is based in Akron, Ohio. Since 1890, it has had a mission to care for as many children as possible.

Dr. Parry’s bright idea to draw on dressings could really make a difference to children all over the world. Every hospital must have someone who is talented at drawing, so every hospital could do this. It takes very little time, yet it makes a major difference to a child’s recovery.
